Polvertic is a specialized drug used in diseases of the inner ear. Its task is to improve the blood supply to the labyrinth.
Polvertic – application
Polvertic is used in the treatment of diseases of the inner ear (including Menier’s disease) and diseases manifested by tinnitus, dizziness and increasing hearing impairment. It can also be used in the symptomatic treatment of vertigo that is of vestibular origin.
After oral administration, it is almost completely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, and its highest concentration in serum is reached about 1 hour after administration.
Polvertic – action
The active substance of Polvertic is betahistine, which has the ability to change the blood flow in the inner ear and directly affect the nerve cells of the vestibular nucleus. It also contributes to the increase in the permeability of the pulmonary epithelium, and in some patients it may lead to a slight reduction in blood pressure.
Polvertic – contraindications
Contraindications to the use of Polvetric are allergy to any of the drug components or the presence of a pheochromocytoma. People with hereditary galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactose deficiency and glucose-galactose malabsorption can not use it. In addition, it is not recommended to give it to children and adolescents under 18 years of age. It has not been tested whether the use of betahistine is safe during pregnancy, but it is known for certain that the use of the drug should be avoided during breastfeeding, as the active substance (betahistine) may enter the child’s body through the milk.
Polvertic – precautions
There is a group of patients who should be cautious when administering Polvertic. These are people with active or past peptic ulcer disease, with bronchial asthma, as well as patients with urticaria and allergic rashes or with allergic rhinitis. Caution should also be exercised when administering the drug to people with severe hypotension.
Polvertic – dosage
The recommended dose of Polvertic is 1-2 tablets of 8 mg or half a 16 mg tablet three times a day. After thorough examinations, the doctor may prescribe different doses – it all depends on the patient’s health condition and the severity of the disease.
Polvertic – possible side effects
As with other drugs, side effects such as nausea, dyspepsia or gastrointestinal disorders may occur during the use of Polvertic, especially long-term. However, they are not common and concern only a small percentage of patients. In addition, itching or skin rash may appear in rare cases. Allergic reactions are also possible, with swelling of the face, tongue, lips or neck. In this case, stop taking it immediately and consult a doctor.
