One of the most popular antipyretic and analgesic preparations is polopyrin. In addition to its basic action, thanks to the combination of acetylsalicylic acid with other active substances, the range of its action is greater and more effective in the treatment of cold or flu symptoms. Multi-ingredient preparations may have a soothing effect on a sore throat, reduce swelling of the nasal mucosa, thin a runny nose and facilitate expectoration of secretions from the respiratory tract, and support the body’s immunity. What is the main ingredient of Polopyrin? What types of Polopyrins are available on the pharmaceutical market? What are the characteristics of each of them?
A home first aid kit should contain the necessary resources that may come in handy in the event of a sudden illness or accident. In the home first aid kit, apart from dressings, antiallergic drugs, anti-diarrheal drugs and creams to alleviate burns, painkillers and antipyretics used in case of colds or flu are very important. Polopyrin can be such a drug.
The main ingredient of polopyrin – what is acetylsalicylic acid?
Acetylsalicylic acid (Latin acidum acetylsalicylicum), colloquially called aspirin (from German Aspirin), an acronym for ASA (acetylsalicylic acid). This substance is an organic chemical compound which is an acetyl derivative of salicylic acid.
Acetylsalicylic acid is obtained by reacting salicylic acid with acetic anhydride in the presence of sulfuric or phosphoric acid as a catalyst.
Acetylsalicylic acid exhibits actions characteristic of the NSAID group, i.e. anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antipyretic and platelet aggregation inhibiting activity, but it is also used in agriculture to stimulate immunity in plants.
Medicines containing acetylsalicylic acid are contraindicated for people suffering from gastric or duodenal ulcer disease.
It is also not recommended for use in pregnant women, and in young children and adolescents, as it may cause potentially fatal Reye’s syndrome.
In addition, drugs containing acetylsalicylic acid should not be used by people with bleeding disorders such as hemophilia or von Willebrand disease.
These drugs should also not be used by people suffering from asthma, people with diabetes and people before surgery.
Acetylsalicylic acid occurs in several different drug forms, such as: tablets, gastro-resistant tablets, effervescent tablets, granules, aerosol-spray.
This compound is also a component of many complex drugs enriched with additional medicinal substances such as: ascorbic acid (vitamin C), caffeine, etenzamide, paracetamol, glycine, pseudoephedrine, bisoprolol, clopidogrel, chlorphenamine, phenylephrine.
Medicines in which acetylsalicylic acid is the main ingredient are generally available over the counter. The common name of Aspirin is reserved in Poland for acetylsalicylic acid produced by Bayer, while the trade name of the Polish pure acetylsalicylic acid drug is Polopyrin.

This preparation has the same effect as Polopyrin S, i.e. it has analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory properties and inhibits platelet aggregation.
Vitamin C is essential in many metabolic transformations – it participates in the processes of oxidation and reduction, it is an antioxidant, it takes e.g. participation in the biosynthesis of collagen, folic acid, adrenal cortex hormones or facilitates the absorption of iron.
Polopyrin C is in the form of effervescent tablets, thanks to which acetylsalicylic acid is absorbed faster from the gastrointestinal tract.
The preparation is intended for oral use. Effervescent tablets should be dissolved in 0,75 glasses of water and drink the suspension with a meal
