Scientists from the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Olsztyn are working on the development of a natural dietary supplement that limits the action of viruses and strengthens immunity. It contains spermidine and eugenol, substances with potential antiviral activity.

Research on the influence of spermidine and eugenol on our body has brought very promising results.

Spermidine is an organic chemical compound found in human sperm. It has been proven that it has a positive effect on the cardiovascular system. Its consumption lowers blood pressure. It also has a positive effect on our immune system by inducing autophagy, i.e. the degradation of damaged or unnecessary cells and proteins. In vitro studies have shown that coronavirus infection disrupts many metabolic pathways, and the presence of spermidine reduces its spread.

Eugenol is an aromatic organic chemical compound that serves, among others, for the production of vanillin. It is found in clove oil and cinnamon. It is a colorless oily liquid with a pleasant pungent smell. It also has the ability to neutralize the animal coronavirus, limiting the multiplication of the viruses in the infected host’s cells.

In conclusion, taking a spermidine-eugenol-based dietary supplement is expected to inhibit the development of SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe pulmonary complications of COVID-19, according to scientists. Remember – dietary supplements are not drugs, so the new drug may support the body, but it will not cure the infection caused by the new coronavirus.

A new, XNUMX% natural, dietary supplement is being developed as part of a European research project called SPIN (Spermidin and eugenol integrator for contrasting incidence of coronavirus in EU population) and is implemented under the program of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (in the area of EIT Food).

The project leader is the University of Turin (Italy), and Poles are part of a large international consortium. The work on the supplement is a supportive action, while we are still trying to get an effective vaccine against the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus.

In the longer term, the project also includes workshops for scientists, nutritionists, food and nutrition experts, pharmaceutical workers and students.

The new product is to be available on the European market in early 2021. However, the international team continues to collect information on consumer attitudes towards dietary supplements and innovative solutions in the fight against the coronavirus. Everyone can share their opinion by completing a short anonymous questionnaire available on the PAN website.
