A modern method of rehabilitation of cardiac patients, developed by Polish scientists as part of the TELEREH-HF project, introduces the possibility of treating patients without leaving home.

Telemedicine in cardiology

Thanks to the use of advanced medical and telecommunication technologies, even several times more patients can be treated compared to traditional methods. Free access of patients to hybrid telerehabilitation and the benefits for the national health care system are obvious.

Thanks to the cooperation of the most important Polish research centers and co-financing by the National Center for Research and Development, it is possible to introduce treatment standards that have a chance to widely disseminate and, above all, facilitate access to a method with a number of benefits. Each patient suffering from cardiovascular diseases, after a thorough outpatient examination, will have access to modern equipment that allows continuing treatment at home, without having to visit a cardiologist in person.

The doctor receives tools for constant monitoring of the patient’s condition, carried out remotely via the Internet. The entire system allows you to save time, optimize costs and reduce the involvement of the health care system in comparison to the existing, necessary stationary consultations. Reducing queues in health centers and significantly lowering the costs of treating patients – while maintaining the highest standards of treatment and rehabilitation – in the current reality of pandemic restrictions constitute a significant value of the project.

What is hybrid comprehensive cardiac telerehabilitation?

The method consists of two stages: initial, carried out in the hospital or outpatient clinic, and basic – carried out at the patient’s home. The aim of the preliminary stage is clinical evaluation of the patient, conducting research, optimization of treatment, education, equipping patients with telemonitoring equipment (ECG, blood pressure monitor, scale), learning how to use it, and individually planning physical training and conducting training training.

In the next, essential stage, the patient carries out telemonitoring cardiac rehabilitation at home, interacting interactively with the Telecardiology Center using the equipment provided under the program.

– Cardiac telerehabilitation leads to the improvement of psychophysical efficiency and quality of life, which increases the chance for the patient to return to life, social and professional activity faster – says prof. Ryszard Piotrowicz from the National Institute of Cardiology in Warsaw.

It is worth adding that in view of the existing regional disproportions in the participation of patients in cardiac rehabilitation programs in Poland, the developed model of hybrid telerehabilitation allows to increase the availability of rehabilitation.

– Heart failure can be prevented and successfully treated. You just need to implement the knowledge gained through research into the procedures and standards. Telemedicine is a technology and organization that minimizes disconnection and thus enables increasing access to treatment, leveling disproportions, improving and coordinating cooperation. This, in turn, makes it possible to implement knowledge into everyday practice – with all the benefits that result from it.

Polish TELEREH-HF survey – a world standard

The potential of telemedicine was assessed in the world’s first randomized, multicentre, prospective study that assessed comprehensive hybrid telerehabilitation (also including telecare and remote monitoring of implantable devices) in 850 patients with heart failure, as opposed to standard care. The TELEREH-HF project was carried out by a consortium composed of: Institute of Cardiology in Warsaw – leader, Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze, Medical University of Gdańsk, Medical University of Łódź, Medical University of Warsaw and an industrial partner – Pro-PLUS SA, co-financed by National Centre for Research and Development.

– The development of a standard for hybrid cardiac telerehabilitation, which was a challenge only a few years ago, has now become a fact. Patients with heart failure, coronary artery disease, and patients after a heart attack have a chance to participate in a comprehensive hybrid telerehabilitation program at home. As the only company in the world, we have developed a coherent telemedicine system that covers the patient with individual telemedicine care – comments Dr. n. med. Ewa Piotrowicz from the Institute of Cardiology in Warsaw, head of the TELEREH-HF project.

The TELEREH-HF project, awarded by the American Society of Cardiology and other international institutions, is already used in Polish hospitals. The procedure is available to patients with heart failure and financed by the National Health Fund – i.e. free for those in need.
