One of the most severe poisonings is methyl alcohol poisoning. This substance is particularly damaging to the optic nerve, which in a short time leads to its atrophy and partial or complete loss of vision.

Optic nerve atrophy

It can occur as a result of poisoning with heavy metals – especially lead and mercury.

Currently, we encounter more and more often the side effects of drugs that are often used for a long time, without medical supervision. Previously, fungal infections caused by overuse of antibiotics and corticosteroids were mentioned. Some antibiotics, such as streptomycin, can damage the optic nerve. Similarly, medicines for tuberculosis such as ethambutol, if used for a long time, can cause visual impairment and color vision problems. There are people who are particularly sensitive to this type of drugs and therefore should report any visual disturbances to the doctor. Topical corticosteroids can cause glaucoma and cataracts. These drugs are also strongly contraindicated in viral diseases of the cornea.

In the general treatment of various diseases, drugs that can damage the retina are used. These include anti-tuberculosis, anti-rheumatic and sedative preparations. People taking these drugs should see an ophthalmologist in all cases of visual acuity disorders.
