Planting peonies in open ground, care

Herbaceous peonies are long-livers, in one place they grow for more than 10 years. Therefore, planting peonies in open ground must be approached responsibly. We will share with you the secrets of when to plant a shrub, how to choose a place and what you need for good flowering.

Correct planting of peonies in open ground

Herbaceous peonies are planted in the ground in autumn, from August to September. In the spring, rhizomes are planted in extreme cases, when there is no way to wait for a favorable time.

Planting peonies in open ground is done in the fall

Peonies are grown in a place protected from drafts, but they are selected so that the plant is well lit in the morning. For normal growth and full flowering, the shrub needs 6 hours of daylight. Choose a site on a hill, since the flower does not tolerate stagnant moisture.

The peony is unpretentious to soils, grows well on loams. If the soil is sandy, then you will have to add peat, humus and clay. It is better to dig up peatlands with the addition of organic matter and sand.

In the first year after planting, peonies look lethargic and do not bloom. Don’t let that scare you, just keep courting them

A planting pit for a shrub is made according to the scheme 60 × 60 × 60 cm. A distance of at least 1 m is left between the bushes. The bottom of the pit is covered with drainage, then a layer of fertile soil and compost is laid, mineral fertilizers are added. Leave the shrinkage pit for a week. During planting, the rhizomes are not buried, otherwise the plant will not bloom for a long time. Plant the peony correctly so that the top bud is 3-4 cm below ground level.

Outdoor peony care after planting

In the fall, the plant does not need special care. It is enough to cut off the yellowed shoots and feed the bush with ash. All plant residues are burned as a preventive measure against diseases and pests.

In spring, a herbaceous shrub needs full care, which includes:

  • watering;
  • top dressing;
  • weeding.

Water the plant abundantly, but infrequently. It is important that the soil is saturated with moisture to the entire depth of the roots. The root system of an adult plant grows strongly. Peonies need moisture especially acutely in autumn, when flower buds are laid next year. They try to pour water at the root so that the leaves remain dry. After each watering, the soil is loosened, weeds are removed.

They begin to feed the shrub in early spring. As soon as the snow melts, a solution of potassium permanganate is added. During the period of foliage growth, they switch to nitrogen fertilization. During budding, mineral fertilizers with potassium and phosphorus are applied. Nutrient mixtures are applied every 2 weeks.
