We know most of these plants well, but we rarely wonder if they have any additional effects or properties. Among the mosquito busters there are popular flowers, herbs and plants from the vegetable garden. What to plant on the balcony so that summer evenings are free from the intrusive buzzing of mosquitoes? We advise.
- Many plants contain essential oils that effectively repel mosquitoes
- Popular herbs also work well as protection against mosquitoes
- Among the natural mosquito repellers is the popular pelargonium

We are more and more willing to use various natural mosquito and tick repellants, we prepare home-made repellants and incense. It turns out, however, that sometimes it is enough to plant a beautiful plant in a pot so that the mosquitoes do not come close to the balcony or porch. Meet the natural mosquito killers, i.e. nine plants that will effectively discourage little bloodsuckers from coming to our area.
For use on the skin, choose proven repellants, eg MUGGA Spray 50%. DEET for ticks, mosquitoes and black flies or a Mustico mosquito repellent and fluff repellent band
Eight plants that are effective at repelling mosquitoes
- Catnip
Your cat will be very happy to see catnip on your porch or terrace. In addition to being the cat’s favorite stimulant, it also has mosquito repellent properties. Catnip is believed to be 10 times more effective than DEET, an ingredient commonly found in insect repellent. It is a very easy plant to grow.
- Calendula
The popular marigold is not only a beautiful flower and a favorite of herbalists, this bright, hardy annual plant will do a great job of protecting your balcony. Marigolds contain pyrethrum, a component of many insect repellants, and have a fairly unique smell that insects find repulsive. In addition, the flowers are beautiful and in themselves are an unusual decoration. If you plant marigolds with tomatoes, you will also gain protection for your crops – insects really hate them. What’s more, marigold flowers are used to prepare a health-promoting tea that is great for problems with the digestive system.
- Basil
The favorite herb, which we gladly buy in pots, not only tastes good. Not only does it work as a green decoration, because the basil leaves have a beautiful, juicy shade, but with each gentle movement of the stems, they spread a tempting aroma around them. Tempting, of course, to people, because insects hate it. There are many different varieties of basil, so you can find the ones you like best. Growing is trivial, just don’t let it dry out.
- Lavender
The soothing and calming scent of lavender is not its only asset. In addition to beautiful flowers that are perfect as decorations, also lavender will help to chase away mosquitoes from the terrace or porch. You can also make delicious, relaxing tea from it, make sachets for the wardrobe or fragrant decorations.
- Pepper mint
Most insects despise the smell and taste of peppermint, so planting it at home is a great way to keep uninvited guests from getting close. Plus, you get a great addition to your dishes and teas. Mint leaves rubbed into the skin will well soothe mosquito bites.
- Garlic
While eating garlic won’t work on these vampire insect vampires (scientists have tested it), planting it in your garden or on your balcony will. You can safely plant it with other vegetables. An additional advantage is its nice inflorescences during flowering.
- Rosemary
Some love it, others hate it, and mosquitoes certainly belong to the latter group. Rosemary is not only an addition to exquisite cuisine, it is also a beautiful plant that repels insects very well. It is perfect for a herb garden or flower bed and even attracts butterflies!
- Pelargonia
Few people know that the queen of Polish balconies, in addition to beautifully decorating the balustrade or window sill, can effectively discourage mosquitoes from visiting. It is a very useful insect repellent. Growing them is not demanding, remember that geraniums do not like too much water.
