It was assumed that thanks to this patriotic association, the younger generation would grow up in the pursuit of noble ideals, learn to live in a socialist society with collective values.

Any citizen of the Soviet Union who reached the age of nine had the right to join the ranks of the pioneers. All decisions in the organization were made by general voting, including those on the admission or expulsion of participants. The pioneers had a strict charter and their own laws. And they differed significantly from similar documents of the Octoberites and Komsomol members.

Later, participants in the pioneer movement began to be recruited to work on collective farms, children helped traffic inspectors, participated in youth fire brigades, patrolled the territories of forestry and reservoirs, and looked after animals.

Are there any analogues of pioneer organizations today?

In modern Our Country, they are trying to resume the patriotic education of the younger generation. In 2016, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu initiated the creation of the All- military-patriotic public movement for children and youth “UNARMIA”. More than a million schoolchildren have already joined the ranks of the Yunarmiya members. Children and teenagers got the opportunity to go in for sports in new sports complexes, learn the basics of basic military training, develop leadership skills, and acquire scientific and technical knowledge. Also, children are taught the basics of journalism, diplomacy and other specialties, which allows students to more consciously approach the choice of their future profession. The members of the Yunarmiya, like the pioneers, had the opportunity to relax in the best camps in the country – Artek, Orlyonok, Smena and others.

How did the pioneers differ from the Octoberists?

The October people are the future pioneers. For young children, a special kind of patriotic movement was created. They were called “Octobers” because the first members of this organization were the same age as the October Revolution. This movement became a kind of initial stage of political education in the USSR and familiarization with the values of the Komsomol movement.

Children 7-9 years old became members of the October movement, helped pioneers and Komsomol members, and in the future aspired to become pioneers. The Octoberites at first wore a red star sewn on the shirt on the left, and later they began to be given badges in the form of a five-pointed star with a child’s portrait of Lenin. Educational lessons were held with the children in a playful way, and they were also encouraged to help the elders: pioneers, Komsomol members and communists.
