In the third trimester of pregnancy, the uterus enlarges significantly and begins to press on the pelvic bones, adjacent vessels and nerve endings. So a pinched nerve can occur during pregnancy, which is manifested by acute pain and limited mobility.

Symptoms of a pinched sciatic nerve during pregnancy

Pinching sciatica proceeds in different ways: it can cause acute pain, which makes it impossible to straighten up, sit down or lie down, or be almost asymptomatic.

A pinched nerve during pregnancy is not always accompanied by severe pain

Main manifestations:

  • Pain. It can be sharp, burning or aching, pulling. It occurs in the lumbar region or sacrum, and then spreads to the buttock or the entire leg. It is impossible to predict what exactly will hurt and how.
  • Numbness. The woman’s lower limbs sensitivity disappears, a tingling sensation appears. For example, one part of the leg may ache, the other may become numb.
  • Restricted mobility. Severe discomfort does not allow getting up, rolling over, lying down, or moving at all.

In some cases, pinching of sciatica leads to disruption of the work of neighboring organs and systems. For example, a woman loses control of her bowels and bladder. The body temperature may rise.

How to fix a pinched nerve during pregnancy?

If you notice pinching symptoms during pregnancy, see your doctor. If the doctor recommends to endure – do not give up and do not put up with the pain: visit a neurologist or osteopath, who will prescribe effective therapy for you.

The following methods are commonly used to troubleshoot the problem:

  • Exercise therapy – correctly selected exercises return the vertebrae to the desired position, strengthen muscles and gradually eliminate pain.
  • Blockade with painkillers – indicated in cases where the discomfort is unbearable, this is an extreme measure.
  • Massage – restores the correct configuration of the vertebrae. It should only be performed by a qualified doctor.
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or warming ointments – improve blood flow in the affected area, relieve pain.

If the ailment provoked a pregnancy, it is unacceptable to treat the pinching of the sciatic nerve on its own. Using inappropriate ointments, massage from a friend, or heating wraps can seriously harm the health of both mother and baby. Do not take risks and coordinate all therapeutic measures with your doctor.
