Every gardener and gardener annually conducts an intensive weed control. These annoying plants are rapidly spreading throughout the site. One has only to relax a little, as they immediately cover the entire garden with a thick “carpet”. They take away strength from the soil, and also obscure cultivated plants. One of these weeds is hogweed. He is familiar to almost all gardeners. It is worth figuring out what kind of grass it is and how to get rid of an unwanted “guest”.

Features of the pig

Most often, pigs are found in the Crimea, the Caucasus, the South Volga region, as well as in some Central Asian countries. Likes dry hot climate. The plant begins to bloom in June and ends in late autumn. It can be propagated by both seeds and root system. After shedding, pigworm seeds rarely germinate. Mostly the reproduction of the plant occurs due to the rhizome.

Attention! About 2000 seeds can form on one plant.

The roots of the pigworm are thick, have large scales. They are located horizontally or with a slope to the ground surface. The roots have the ability to form ascending shoots which then grow outward and form green leaves. Such shoots can quickly spread along the ground, taking root and forming new young stems. Then the end of the escape burrows into the ground again. Because of this ability, the plant was called a pig. This process can continue for a very long time, giving more and more new shoots.

It is impossible to say exactly what type the root system of the pigworm belongs to. It can change from sympodial to monopodial. Also, the roots of the plant are both aboveground and underground at the same time. This feature helps the weed to grow very quickly, mastering ever larger areas. Svinora is unpretentious to the composition of the soil, and can grow in absolutely any soil. The photo clearly shows how much the pig can grow.

In uncultivated land, the plant spreads by means of its creeping lashes. Svinora is able to displace other vegetation from the site. In loose, well-cultivated soil, pigworm reproduces mainly by underground rhizomes. The fight against this plant is hampered by the rapid growth of the rhizome, which destroys other crops. Also, powerful roots greatly complicate the process of soil cultivation.

Important! In the cultivated soil, the hog deepens into the ground by 22 cm, and in the uncultivated soil only by 18 cm.

The stalks of the hogweed branch immediately at the base of the plant. They can grow up to 30 cm in height. There are also plants up to 50 cm high. The leaves are lanceolate, pointed. They are quite hard and rough, there may be sparse hairs. The color of the leaves is green with a dark gray or bluish tinge. Spike-shaped twigs of pigworm form an inflorescence collected in the upper part of the plant. The length of each branch is about 6–7 cm. In one inflorescence there can be from 3 to 8 such branches.

Each spikelet of the pigtail has an oblong shape. They are located on one side of the branches of the inflorescence in 2 rows. Spikelets one-flowered or two-flowered with membranous scales. The fruit is in a flower scale, along with which it falls off when ripe. The caryopsis has an oblong-ovoid shape. The flat, trihedral fruit is about 3 mm long and at least 1 mm wide. Ripened flower scales are straw-yellow, but may also be green with a purple tint.

Pig control measures

Many gardeners are racking their brains thinking about how to get rid of the pig. The following tips will help make the fight against the plant effective and fairly quick. When sowing or planting various crops, one should take into account the degree of contamination of the site with pigs. Areas where plants are quite small can be safely sown with cotton. In some areas, such places are reserved for planting industrial and row crops. But the fields and gardens, where the pig finger has spread greatly, are suitable for growing crops.

To destroy the weed, autumn deep plowing of the soil should be carried out. In this case, tillage must necessarily be early, immediately after the harvest has been harvested. The soil is plowed to the depth of root germination (about 22 cm), placing the layers on edge so that the soil can dry well. Then all the roots of the plants are combed out. It is also possible to carry out stubble plowing with the help of special plows.

Attention! Plowing not only helps to get rid of annoying weeds, but also improves soil fertility.

A month after peeling, it is necessary to carry out deep plowing of the soil with combing out the roots of plants. Next year, the soil must be kept under black fallow. This means that the whole season the field should not be planted with anything. The following procedures for the fight against pigs take place in the following sequence:

  • in the spring, the rhizomes of plants are combed out with the help of a spring cultivator;
  • in early May, the soil is again plowed to the depth of germination of the root system, after which the residues of the roots are immediately combed out;
  • throughout the summer, about 4 plowing of the soil should be carried out to a depth of about 10 cm with combing out the roots of plants.

In the spring of next year, it will be necessary to plow the land again and comb out the last remnants of the rhizomes of the hog. After all these procedures, you can start sowing cultivated plants. You may have to harrow the soil several times, but it’s worth it.

Important! Before sowing cotton in spring, the soil is plowed to a depth of about 7–8 cm, and in irrigated agriculture, the depth increases to 18 cm.

Plowing the soil with omach or disc tools can lead to an even greater spread of pigs, so these tools are not used in weedy areas. On the territory of Central Asia, where pigs grow in large quantities, it is often necessary to carry out repeated spring plowing of the soil for a better result.

Conclusion

Now you know for sure that you need to start getting rid of the pigworm immediately, until the weed has become the main plant in the garden. The article describes in detail an effective method of how to destroy a pig.
