Physiological serum: how to use it?

What is the composition of physiological serum?

Physiological serum is a transparent, saline solution. It is composed of sterile distilled water and diluted sodium chloride. It is an isotonic formulation, that is, it contains the same concentration of particles as blood, which is why it is so well tolerated by the human body.

Available without a prescription in pharmacies and supermarkets, physiological serum is marketed in the form of sterile single doses to be used within 24 hours after opening, or as a spray.

Clean baby’s eyes with physiological serum

It is often in the maternity ward that the physiological serum is used for the first time, to disinfect and clean the sensitive areas of the infant’s face. Applied to a cotton or sterile compress, it gently cleans the eyelids and the corners of the baby’s eyes from the inside to the outside, without irritating it.

If your child has a small eye infection, you can apply a few drops directly into the eye to disinfect and remove the secretions.

An effective solution for cleaning the nose of toddlers

Washing the nose in an infant is essential to reduce nasal congestion and allow it to breathe properly. Position your baby on his back by placing his head on the side and insert a small cotton ball soaked in physiological serum into his nose. Most of the dirt in the cavity will easily come off, or your baby will sneeze, allowing the rest of the cellular debris to escape.

If your baby’s nose is very crowded, you can inject the saline solution into one nostril by exerting light pressure to push it out through the other nostril. Repeat the maneuver several times a day if necessary, using in addition a Baby Fly.

Physiological serum to soothe dry eye in adults

Heating, ventilation, pollution, dust, wearing lenses … The eyes can sometimes dry out and cause eye discomfort. The saline composition of physiological serum is very close to natural human tears, you can use it directly to rehydrate your eyes. A few drops are enough to effectively moisten the eyeball and soothe the irritation.

To clean a superficial wound

Daily cleaning with physiological serum helps prevent the risk of infection from a scratch or a small cut. Unlike an antiseptic, you can use it as many times as you want to cleanse without risking irritating the area.

Cleanse your breast after breastfeeding

To clean your nipple before and after breastfeeding, physiological saline can be very useful. Its formulation presents no risk for the baby, who will then put his mouth on the area to suck. Be careful, it will have no effect on any crevices which require the application of appropriate care.

Physiological serum for post-piercing care

A piercing requires daily care during the first weeks that follow. To facilitate healing, compresses of physiological serum once or several times a day will cleanse the secretions and dry residues accumulated around the hole and the jewel.
