This purely scientific publication contains more than a thousand idioms with interpretations, a preface, an index and all the appropriate vocabulary — this is the result of ten years of work by the staff of the Institute of the Russian Language of the Russian Academy of Sciences. However, the book edited by A. Baranov and D. Dobrovolsky is interesting to anyone who is not indifferent to the language. Its first advantage is a scattering of real examples of the use of idioms from modern texts (fiction and journalistic, poetic and on the Internet), which gives a feeling of immersion in a living, “unkempt” linguistic element. The second is a “two-layer” way of describing the meaning of an idiom, thanks to which we learn not only the meaning of the expression itself, but also the image that is embedded in it. For example, what does it mean to «look into the mouth»? We want to say that someone «completely and immediately perceives someone’s statements, treating them uncritically and considering them as a guide to action.» How do we describe this situation? It turns out, as «the process of constant monitoring of the work of the speech apparatus, replacing the process of understanding the statements heard.» It makes you want to use the dictionary as a source of riddles. Here, for example, idiom X: «listen carefully, becoming interested in something that is described by analogy with the behavior of listening animals.» There are versions?
