Phlox cuttings: how to propagate
Propagating phlox by cuttings is not so difficult. After all, the shoots of these flowers are quite life-loving and take root well. But for this they need to create comfortable conditions.
How to propagate phlox with stem cuttings?
The event should start in late May – early June, until the shoots become stiff. To do this, cut out some strong cuttings with 2-3 knots. In addition, there should be several pairs of leaves on them. Make the lower cut directly under the knot, the upper cut at a distance of 5 cm. Make a soil mixture consisting of garden soil, humus and sand, mixed in equal proportions.
Before planting, remove the upper leaves and cut the lower ones in half. Plant cuttings in this way:
- Place a 10 cm layer of soil mixture and cover it with 2 cm of wet sand.
- Root the cuttings so that the end does not touch the ground.
- Maintain a distance of 5-6 cm between each shoot. The distance between rows should reach 8-10 cm.
- Build the frame and stretch the film over it.
After planting, water the cuttings 2 times a day with warm water. You can disassemble the greenhouse in 2 weeks. At the end of July, the rooted shoots should be transplanted to another place prepared in the same way. Here the flowers will remain until next spring.
How to propagate phlox with leaf cuttings?
A similar cultivation method can be started in late July – early August. For this propagation method, you need a leaf 8-10 cm long, cut with an axillary bud and a small piece of stem. In addition, it is necessary to prepare a soil mixture consisting of equal shares of humus, garden soil and sand. Cuttings should be rooted in this way:
- Pour a 10 cm layer of soil into boxes or containers and cover it with a 2 cm layer of sand.
- Root the cuttings so that the bud is 1 cm deep.
- Maintain a distance of 5 cm between each shoot.
- Spray the soil with a spray bottle and cover the crates with glass.
- Place the cuttings in a room with a temperature of + 18-20 ° C.
During cultivation, do not allow the soil to dry out. Moisten shoots from a spray bottle once a day. Also, do not forget to periodically ventilate the greenhouse. As a rule, the roots appear after 2-3 weeks. Then you can remove the glass. You need to plant plants in open ground next spring.
You can propagate phlox by cuttings in different ways. Moreover, any of them does not take much time and effort. After all, flower shoots are very viable and take root well.
