Hippocrates did the division of personality in his research, taking into account the dominant features. He distinguished the following personality types: phlegmatic, choleric, sanguine and melancholic. Who is a phlegmatic? What traits are the main and distinguishing features of this type of personality? How does the phlegmatic fit in at work and in the social environment?
The personality types distinguished by Hippocrates differ from each other in the way they behave, show emotions and think. Each personality has specific characteristics:
- Phlegmatic – calm
- Melancholic – perfection
- Sanguine – is a type of personality who enjoys the company of others
- Choleric – high energy, emotionality, often uncontrollable
Hippocrates distinguished these personality types already in ancient times. The typology was developed in the XNUMXth century by Florence Littauer, yet another division was made by Carl Jung. Nowadays, you can make a personality test yourself, the most popular measurement tool is the Myers-Briggs Personality Index. However, it is worth relying on the opinion of professionals who will make a professional personality assessment based on tests, research and interviews.
Phlegmatic – personal characteristics
The phlegmatic is the opposite of the sanguine personality type, because the sanguine cannot contain his emotions, is effusive, shows emotions easily, just like a choleric. Both sanguine and choleric are extroverts who very often cannot inhibit and control their emotions. What characterizes the melancholic? First of all, he is a closed person, who has a strong tendency to pessimism, he is also characterized by perfectionism (this trait is also shared by a phlegmatic). A melancholic can be very emotional, analyze his successes and failures, he is very diligent. The phlegmatic and melancholic are mostly empathetic people. What are the qualities of a phlegmatic?
- composure
- mental balance
- composure
A phlegmatic is a personality characterized by the need and no need to be the center of attention. It is a person who does not want, does not like, does not feel the need to talk about their current emotions. However, the lack of exuberance does not mean that the phlegmatic is insensitive, insensitive to another person, on the contrary, it is a personality type that can very quickly get involved in another person’s problems if asked to do so. He likes to show concern for others, in addition, the phlegmatic is a very good listener and observer of people and situations. A phlegmatic has a positive attitude towards life and the world around him, failures do not discourage him.
Of course, the phlegmatic is a typical introvert, so he doesn’t talk much about himself, he doesn’t like it, he values secrecy. Due to the ability to listen, he is not only an excellent listener, but also a mediator in critical and problematic situations.
Phlegmatic – behavior at work
As a rule, a phlegmatic should be considered conscientious, carrying out the task entrusted to him precisely and to the end. It works best according to a set schedule, so it does not tolerate changes very well, and it is also unable to make quick decisions. A phlegmatic is unlikely to be suitable for managerial positions, but he will do well in positions that require mediation and solving psychological problems. A phlegmatic is also an analytical, precise, meticulous and patient person, which is why he will find himself very well in mental professions, for example as a scientist.
