Persimmon Rossiyanka is a hybrid, the selection of which was worked on by Ukrainian biologists. The variety was bred in 1959 by scientists of the Nikitsky Botanical Garden. Appeared as a result of hybridization of persimmon varieties Eastern and Virgin. The plant differs from other exotic representatives in high frost resistance, good immunity. Another plus of the culture is that it does not need pollinators.
Description of persimmon varieties Rossiyanka with a photo
Hybrid Rossiyanka is a medium-sized tree with a wide, spreading crown. It reaches a height of 4-5 m. The leaves of a dense structure, elongated shape, have a green color.
The flower stalks of the persimmon are of a pale yellow hue, of an unusual shape (the tips of the petals are twisted outwards).
Fruit weight – 120-140 g. Unripe specimens are tart in taste, covered with a mildly pronounced wax coating. In order for the persimmon to ripen, it must be placed in the refrigerator or freezer. Ripe fruit is fleshy, sweet in taste.
According to the reviews of experienced gardeners, in order to protect the Rossiyanka persimmon from dropping peduncles in central Our Country, it is recommended to treat trees with a solution of gibberellin during the flowering period. A pollinator planted on the site will not be superfluous.
Characteristics of persimmon Rossiyanka
The woman begins to bear fruit in the third year. But the tree drops the first harvest. This means that the persimmon took root, but did not gain the proper strength. Flowering occurs no earlier than the average daily temperature is set within + 20-22˚С (in the first days of June). Lasts 10-12 days.
It is not worth counting on a big harvest before the woman is five years old. From one adult tree, 60-70 kg of fruit can be removed. Ripening occurs by the end of autumn in November. The shelf life of persimmons is small, the berry is suitable for fresh consumption up to 30 days.
Advantages and disadvantages
The hybrid has a number of advantages in comparison with other heat-loving varieties. The culture does not need special care, therefore it is in demand among gardeners.
Advantages of the variety:
- The first crop is harvested already 3-4 years after planting.
- The variety is fully adapted to the harsh conditions of central Our Country. Persimmon can withstand temperatures down to minus 28-30˚С.
- The woman does not need pollinators. Yields consistently. The fruits are quite large.
- Treatment with chemicals is extremely rare. Therefore, the fruits are environmentally friendly.
There were no shortcomings in the persimmon variety Rossiyanka.
How to plant persimmon Rossiyanka
It is recommended to purchase a seedling in a nursery specializing in persimmon cultivation or an online store. Buying from hand, the gardener runs the risk of acquiring a tree of an unknown variety. The plant should not be older than two years, an adult seedling may not take root. Before transplanting, the root of the tree should be placed in a container with water for 2-3 hours.
In areas with harsh winters and cold autumn, Rossiyanka persimmons are planted in the spring. In regions with a more gentle climate, tree planting can also be done in the autumn.
A hole for a seedling should be dug in advance (at least 1-2 days in advance).
The soil should be ventilated and evenly heated. After planting, the pit must be filled with a mixture of sand, manure and loose soil (all components are taken in equal proportions). So that the young seedling does not break from gusts of wind, it is necessary to install a high peg nearby, tie a hybrid to it.
Features of growing persimmon Rossiyanka in the Moscow region and the Middle lane
When choosing a landing site, the advantage should be given to a well-lit area, protected from through winds. As a rule, such a place is located on the south side of the house or a high fence.
Lack of sunlight leads to weak plant growth, twisting of the leaves. The fruits either ripen poorly or fall off early. Persimmon shading by other fruit and berry plantations is not welcome. This leads to the appearance of pests and fungal diseases. You also need to know that the distance from the surface to groundwater should be at least 70-80 cm.
Watering persimmons in central Our Country is carried out only during the hot period. For the winter, it is recommended to build protection against hares so that they cannot damage the bark on the tree.
Persimmon care
The interspecific hybrid Rossiyanka is unpretentious in care. To reap a good harvest, you need to maintain agrotechnical standards.
Watering
A young seedling in the first years of life is especially demanding on watering. Persimmon tolerates an excess of moisture more easily than its lack. The norm for a medium-sized tree is 50-70 liters of liquid under one root. Lack of regular watering leads to drying of the root and death of the tree. 1,5 months before the end of the growing season, watering is stopped. This will improve the keeping quality and taste of the fruit.
Loosening
Aeration of the soil has a positive effect on the growth of persimmons. During the season, you need to loosen the soil near the tree at least six times. To provide the woman with the necessary level of acidity, a small amount of table vinegar is periodically added to the water for watering the seedling. To reduce moisture loss and to avoid the appearance of a hard crust, it is recommended to mulch the soil.
Additional fertilizing
Feeding the woman with mineral and organic fertilizers is the key to active growth. Especially carefully it is necessary to approach this issue in the first years of a tree’s life. Excess fertilizer leads to an increase in the vegetative mass, and the fruiting period is delayed.
It should be remembered that up to 15 kg of organic matter is enough for a young plant for normal life, up to 20 kg for an adult. Fertilizers are applied after harvest. This will help increase the immunity and winter hardiness of the plant.
Shelter for the winter
Although the woman belongs to winter-hardy varieties, it is recommended to protect a young tree in severe frosts in the first few years. For this, a covering or non-woven material is suitable.
Pruning persimmon Rossiyanka
At the initial stage, persimmon shoots need to form a crown. When the seedling reaches a height of 1-1,5 m, the crown is cut off. The skeleton of a tree is formed from 3-4 branches.
Further pruning is not necessary. The underdeveloped and fruitful shoots of the woman dry up, and fall off at the slightest gust of wind.
It is recommended to prune branches growing at an angle of more than 30˚. They will only interfere and slow down the growth of persimmons. You can learn about how the Rossiyanka persimmon crown is formed from the video.
Possible problems in growing
With improper care, seedlings can suffer from diseases. The greatest danger is:
- gray rot;
- bacterial cancer;
- black spot;
- scab;
- powdery mildew.
The reason for the appearance of diseases is non-compliance with agricultural standards, adverse climatic conditions. For treatment, it is recommended to use Bordeaux liquid or biofungicides (Mukosan, Fitosporin, Bikol).
To get rid of parasites, spraying with an insecticide Karbofos or a systemic drug Aktara is carried out.
Harvesting and storage
Berry picking is carried out manually with extreme care. A full-fledged harvest persimmon tree gives in the fifth or sixth year.
By the time the fruit is harvested, the tree sheds its foliage. How long the persimmon will be stored directly depends on the presence of scratches, dents and other damage on the fruit. Gently clasping the fruit with your hand, it is scrolled on the stalk.
Unripe fruits are laid out in a dark, cool place (the temperature should not exceed + 15˚С). You should also provide high humidity in the room. Fresh Rossiyanka is stored for up to a month. If the crop is large, it is allowed for processing. Fragrant candied fruits, jam, preserves, compotes are obtained from persimmon.
Conclusion
Persimmon Rossiyanka is the most adapted variety of exotic fruit for growing in central Our Country. Caring for the tree is easy, and the orange-red fruits, which do not lose beneficial trace elements when frozen and dried, provide seven vitamins for the whole year.
