Perm hosted a week of free vision correction operations at the Tri-3 clinic.

Due to diabetes mellitus, Anatoly Kazantsev’s eyesight deteriorated sharply. At first, one eye began to see poorly, then the other. The pensioner did not have money for a complex expensive operation: all the funds go to the house and household. He has already come to terms with the fact that he may lose his eyesight forever, but got into the program of support for people with visual impairments “Special Look”. This is a joint project of the Tri-Z clinic, Alisher Usmanov’s Art, Science and Sport Charity Foundation and the Foundation for Research and Treatment of Retinal Diseases. The week of free ophthalmic surgeries “Right to See” was held in Perm from 2 to 8 April. During this period, thirteen operations were performed, including to Anatoly Kazantsev. Now he is undergoing a rehabilitation course and is immensely happy with his improved vision.

Modern medicine makes it possible to restore vision in seemingly hopeless situations, in which a person became blind ten years ago. And the number of patients requiring retinal and vitreous surgery is increasing every year. This is due to new diagnostic capabilities that allow to identify pathologies at early stages. At the same time, the question of the availability of vitreoretinal surgery (a method of treating the pathology of the vitreous body and retina of the eye. – Ed.) Remains open. Many people simply cannot afford it.

The purpose of the Right to See charity event is to make retinal surgery accessible to ordinary people from regions whose financial resources do not allow them to seek urgent medical care.

“Today, the treatment of retinal diseases is a particularly acute problem,” comments Tatyana Avanesova, Chairperson of the Foundation for Research and Treatment of Eye Diseases, vitreoretinal surgeon at the Tri-3 clinic, Candidate of Medical Sciences (Moscow). – Vitreoretinal operations are classified as high-tech, and consumables for their performance are expensive and inaccessible for most of the older generation. Therefore, basically, such operations are carried out within the framework of state guarantees. But getting a quota for free treatment is often a lengthy process. And in the case of such diseases of the retina as its detachment, age-related macular degeneration (exudative form), the slightest delay can turn into a catastrophe – irreversible loss of vision. “

The Right to See program is young, but with great prospects. The Foundation for Research and Treatment of Retinal Diseases is only a year old, it was created in March 2017. Today there are eight specialists in the team, whose main goal is to help people return good vision.

Of the thirteen people operated on in Perm, six patients had retinal detachment, two had traction vitreomacular syndrome, four had a macular hole, and one had bilateral diabetic macular edema. In total, 58 patients from five cities have already received professional assistance in Russia within the framework of the program, free of charge, and have returned sight. The organizers plan to do ten operations every month.

The Unspeakable Lookout program is not limited to operations only. An important area is the social adaptation of visually impaired or blind people: the organization of a “theater with closed eyes”, popularization and training of tiflo commentators, support for innovations.

Group of companies “Three-3”, whose doctors performed operations within the framework of the “Special Look” project, takes an active position in providing free assistance to socially unprotected segments of the population. At the same time, Tri-Z is one of the leaders in the medical services market, uniting 33 diagnostic centers in 7 regions of Russia and 4 large surgical clinics (one of them is in Perm). Qualified doctors “Three-3” use only the most modern technologies, the staff is attentive to each patient. In addition, the Tri-3 clinics are proud of the fact that complex vitreoretinal surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis within their walls.
