Perazin – indications, contraindications, side effects

Perazine, the active substance of Perazin, is considered in Poland as the drug of first choice in the treatment of delusional syndromes due to its low toxicity and a balanced profile of action. Perazine is a drug from the group of antipsychotic drugs, which is a piperazine derivative of phenothiazine. It blocks dopamine receptors (i.e. it is their antagonist), thus inhibiting dopamine-dependent transmission. The result is a reduction in dopamine levels in certain structures of the central nervous system. It also blocks histamine receptors (i.e. has an antihistamine effect). Perazine has a moderate sedative, antiperspirant, and anti-production effect, and has a weak activating effect. It slightly affects the extrapyramidal system. It also has a relaxing effect on smooth muscles and has an antiemetic effect. Perazine enhances the effect of concurrently used painkillers.

Perazin – indications for use

Perazine it is used in various forms of schizophrenia as well acute psychotic disorders (also catatonic) with symptoms of psychomotor agitation, mania and delusions. Perazine is considered in Poland as the drug of first choice in the treatment of delusional syndromes due to its low toxicity and a balanced profile of action.

Perazin – contraindications to use

The drug can not useif you are allergic to any component of the preparation or other antipsychotic drugs, especially phenothiazines. A contraindication the preparation can also be used with:

  1. history of poneuroleptic malignant syndrome,
  2. severe damage to the bone marrow or blood cells,
  3. coma states,
  4. pregnancy and breastfeeding,
  5. acute poisoning (with the following: sleeping pills, opioids, other neuroleptics, sedatives, antidepressants, alcohol),
  6. prolactin-dependent tumors,
  7. severe liver failure,
  8. depressive states.

Perazin – should be used with caution

During treatment you should not drive or use machines or drink alcohol. In the case of long-term treatment, the possibility of the development of disorders of the extrapyramidal system (so-called drug-induced parkinsonism) should be taken into account. Blood counts, liver function and eyes should be monitored. While treatment exposure to sunlight and UV radiation should be avoided. The preparation should be dose as directed by your doctor.

Perazin – side effects

By applying Perazine, be reckoned with side effects. However, they do not occur in all patients. It must be remembered that this preparation is used in serious ailments, and the positive effects of the action often outweigh the possible inconveniences. All watched side effects should be reported to the doctor.

Very often galactorrhea may occur. Often the following may occur: change in intraocular pressure, swelling of the nasal mucosa, constipation, difficulty urinating, weight gain, dry mouth, increased thirst, sexual dysfunction. Not so often the following may occur: dyskinesia, parkinsonian symptom complex, sleep disturbances, anxiety, nightmares, confusion, dementia. Rarely the following may occur: changes in sensation in the hands and feet, seizures, hypersensitivity of the eyes to light, severe phototoxic reactions with pigment deposition, vascular collapse, gynecomastia, delirium episodes, confusional states. Very rarely the following may occur: edema, agranulocytosis, extrapyramidal symptoms manifested by akathisia, often associated with depression, usually occurring after the manic psychosis phase, poneuroleptic malignant syndrome, respiratory disorders, gastrointestinal complaints, nausea, gangrenous enteritis, lupus erythematosus, cholestasis. Bow Perazine shows the following side effects frequency of unknown occurrence: false pregnancy test results, abnormal heart rhythm, low blood pressure, decrease in the number of leukocytes or platelets, skin changes such as hives or irritation, epistaxis, increased liver enzymes and jaundice, menstrual disorders, enlarged breasts in women.
