PepsiCo will focus on “sustainable farming” and support farmers

PepsiCo announced the introduction of new practices for working with its suppliers to support the environment. The goal of the program will be to reduce harmful emissions by at least 3 million tons over the next ten years

Corporations have embarked on decarbonisation. PepsiCo has been developing green technologies for years, and on April 20 announced a significant expansion of its program. We are talking about the introduction of responsible farming practices in all areas where the company’s product suppliers operate.

As part of the PepsiCo + project, by 2030 it is planned to introduce sustainable farming practices around the world on 3 million hectares, or almost on the entire land used by the company’s suppliers. In addition, PepsiCo will begin to source all agricultural raw materials for its production only from responsible suppliers. The corporation also stated that it will support more than 250 thousand people who are employed in agriculture around the world.

In our country, PepsiCo plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2030% by 40 compared to 2015 levels.

The company is working to grow the ingredients needed for production through “regenerative agriculture” practices. The introduction of such practices allows not to harm the environment and improve the living conditions of farms. PepsiCo is tracking its commitment to the number of responsibly cultivated hectares and employed farmers, and in the near future will begin tracking soil health, carbon emissions, irrigation water health, and improved farmers’ lives. The company has set a goal of achieving full carbon neutrality by 2040.

resource saving

In our country, PepsiCo is the largest industrial processor of potatoes and raw milk and also promotes regenerative agriculture practices. This includes changing crop rotations to conserve soils, using green manures, smart CropTrack solutions to manage irrigation to conserve water resources.

In addition, the company is building new state-of-the-art vegetable storage facilities that reduce its carbon footprint and minimize the use of natural resources. A similar warehouse will open in Novosibirsk in 2021.

Help for farmers

As part of its support for farmers, PepsiCo plans to help the most vulnerable categories, including by facilitating the employment of women. In our country, the company continues to develop a program of trainings and seminars for raw milk suppliers, which was launched in 2012. In 2020, more than two dozen such trainings were organized, which were attended by more than 600 people.

Responsible Purchasing

PepsiCo is investing in potato chips. In 2020, a similar agricultural program was launched in Siberia. All raw materials for the production of chips are certified according to the sustainable farming program. This means that its suppliers fully comply with social, environmental and economic criteria, including taking measures to conserve natural resources and minimize waste from their activities.

The company will purchase from responsible suppliers not only potatoes, corn, cereals and oranges, but also vegetable oils. This will help increase crop yields, reduce resource costs and improve soil conditions. In 2020, PepsiCo purchased 100% responsibly sourced agricultural products in 28 countries, and globally this purchase rate was 87%.

“It is important for us that climate change does not jeopardize the supply of raw materials to our production, and the cultivation of crops does not harm the environment. We will be able to achieve this if we join forces and focus on the qualitative transformation of agriculture,” said Silviu Popović, CEO of PepsiCo Europe. “We will continue to work closely with growers, our suppliers, and accelerate the adoption of regenerative practices to become the standard for farmers. Finally, the time has come for a digital revolution on farms, when big data will play the same important role as agricultural machinery, and technology will ensure sustainable growth.”

Earlier, the popular streaming service Netflix announced its decision to become carbon neutral. By 2022, the company plans to achieve zero greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production and distribution of content.

Signify (formerly Philips Lighting), a global lighting and IoT lighting solutions company, is also aiming to go XNUMX% renewable, achieve zero CO2 and stop using landfills for industrial waste. The company is taking measures to conduct business on the principles of a circular economy – when materials are recycled and reused in production.
