Blood groups – a scientific discovery
A young researcher from Vienna, Karl Landstainer (Nobel Prize winner) discovered in 1900 that when different people’s blood is mixed, sometimes it sticks together (agglutination phenomenon), and sometimes it doesn’t. So he divided the blood into three groups: A, B, and C (later marked as 0). The latter did not stick together at all.
However, it was the Pole Ludwik Hirszfeld together with Emil von Dungern who laid the foundations for the science of blood groups. They introduced what is known today as A, B, AB, and 0, which was then adopted all over the world in 1928. Hirszfeld also measured the Rh factor and discovered the cause of the serological conflict.
The aforementioned letters and zero (in Anglo-Saxon countries, group 0 is pronounced like the letter “o”) are antigens, that is, proteins that cover the surface of all blood cells. There are about forty such antigens, but only these four groups count for transfusions. They are responsible for stimulating the immune system.
The scientist did not stop there, however. 40 years later, he participated in the identification of the Rh factor (Latin rhesus) in rhesus, a species of macaque. This is one type of surface protein. About 86 percent people have this factor (RH +), others do not (RH-). All these discoveries made it clear why blood transfusions were unsuccessful in many cases. There was no match of blood between donor and recipient. People with group 0 are the best donors. They can donate precious fluid to anyone with a different blood type.
