People at risk and risk factors for glaucoma
People at risk
- People with a family history of glaucoma.
- People aged 60 and over.
- Black populations are at greater risk of developing open-angle glaucoma. Their risk increases from the age of 40.
Mexican and Asian populations are also more at risk.
- People with diabetes or hypothyroidism.
- People who have low blood pressure or high blood pressure, and those who have had heart problems in the past.
- People with another eye problem (pronounced myopia, cataracts, chronic uveitis, pseudoexfoliation, etc.).
- People who have had a serious eye injury (a direct blow to the eye, for example).
Risk factors
- The use of certain medicines, especially those containing corticosteroids (for open-angle glaucoma) or those which dilate the pupil (for closed-angle glaucoma).
- The consumption of coffee and tobacco would temporarily increase the pressure inside the eye.
