People who have a family history of the disease. Most forms of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome are inherited autosomal dominantly. A parent carrying the mutation responsible for the disease therefore has a 50% chance of transmitting the disease to each of their children.

 

Prevention

Can we prevent?

If a member of your family has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and you are about to conceive, you may want to see a genetic counselor. This healthcare professional will teach you about the risks of conceiving an affected child and how to avoid it. 

Measures to prevent aggravation

If you have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, it’s important to prevent injury and protect your skin and joints.

  • Avoid injuries. Avoid contact sports, lifting heavy weights, or engaging in injury-prone activities.
  • Young children with EDS who learn to walk are at greater risk for joint dislocation. Have them wear protective clothing.
  • Use skin-friendly soaps and sunscreen to prevent premature skin aging.
