People and risk factors
People at risk
Older people have a higher risk of developing gastritis, simply because the years weaken the lining of the stomach. In addition, infections with Helicobacter pylori are more common in older people.
Risk factors
There are various factors that increase the risk of developing gastritis. People infected with Helicobacter pylori bacteria have a higher risk of developing gastritis. However, the presence of the bacteria in humans is very common. Scientists do not clearly explain why some people, carriers of H. pylori, will develop stomach disease and others will not. Certain parameters such as smoking or stress (and particularly stress suffered during major surgery, major trauma, burns or severe infections) could come into play.
Other risk factors for gastric inflammation are taking medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, which is also an NSAID) regularly or drinking too much alcohol. Alcohol weakens the lining of the stomach.
