Peony Bartzella: description
Peony “Bartzella” is one of the Japanese Ito hybrids. They got this name after the first breeder Toichi Ito, who started crossing herbaceous and tree-like shrubs.
Description of the peony variety “Bartzella”
The main task of Ito and his followers was to create a peony with yellow flowers. Bartzella is one of those varieties. Its petals are bright lemon in color, in the center they turn into a red hue and together form a bright spot.
Ito hybrids: growing a peony
The shrub has the following characteristic features:
- shrub height – about 1 m;
- flowers grow up to 20 cm in diameter, have a pleasant, light aroma;
- leaves of a rich dark green color, until late autumn do not lose their decorative effect;
- the stems are strong, do not require additional support and do not bend under the weight of the inflorescences. The bush does not change its shape;
- the flowering period begins in mid-June and lasts for a month.
The plant forms a large number of flowers – one bush can produce up to 20 flowers at a time. In the cut, they keep fresh for a long time, longer than many other representatives of Ito hybrids.
If you choose the right place for planting, this shrub can grow and bloom profusely for many years without needing to transplant. To do this, you just need to follow some recommendations:
- Peony loves sunlight, but constant presence in the shade can adversely affect flowering and even lead to its absence.
- It grows poorly on heavy soils. The soil should be loose and easily breathable. Stagnation of water is not allowed – the plant can rot.
- Watering is moderate, it is not necessary to flood the bush. Moisten as needed when the top layer of the earth dries up.
- If the peony is planted too deep, it will not bloom. Make sure that the kidneys are no deeper than 3-5 cm from the ground.
- The planting site must be prepared in advance so that the soil subsides. We dig holes with sides and a depth of 60 cm. Put peat, sand and garden soil at the bottom. You immediately need to apply fertilizers – superphosphate and wood ash.
- Prevent weeds from growing nearby. Such a neighborhood is harmful for Bartzella.
The soil is mulched with a small layer of peat and humus. No special shelter is required for the winter, as the plant is frost-resistant. In the spring, after the snow has melted, the mulch must be removed to make room for the buds to grow.
The best time to plant is late August or September. If all the requirements necessary for it are fulfilled, the shrub will delight with an abundance of flowers and longevity.
