Pelvic fractures – first aid, treatment

These are severe injuries that occur as a result of being crushed by heavy objects, debris, falling from a height, running over.

They may be accompanied by damage to the organs inside the abdominal cavity, bladder and urethra. Injuries to the head, chest and limbs are also observed. In severe injuries with massive bleeding, the patient’s condition is severe and requires anti-shock treatment and immediate transport to hospital, preferably with a doctor. In their injuries, fracture is evidenced by pain at the fracture site, which increases with the movements of the limbs in the hip joints. Sometimes such changes may be accompanied by haematuria.

First aid

The patient should be placed flat on the back, and the pelvis should be secured on the side with sand bags or a sheet under the buttocks and lumbar region. The ends of the sheet should be crossed over the patient and tied to a stretcher. After such protection, fast transport to the hospital is necessary.

Treatment

Fractures of the pelvis with a deviation of its annulus, unstable fractures and fractures within the hip joint with displacement require surgical treatment. Likewise, dislocations and fractures in the sacroiliac joints.
