Pelargonium in the fall: transplant, pruning

Pelargonium in the fall: transplant, pruning

In autumn, pelargonium needs special attention. During this period, it is necessary to prepare the plant for winter. And for this you need to trim the plant. In addition, open field crops need replanting.

Pruning pelargonium in the fall

This procedure should be started after all the buds have completely wilted. But remember to finish pruning before December. At this time, the plant begins a dormant period. And such a radical procedure will not benefit the culture.

Pelargonium pruning in the fall should be done after flowering.

Autumn pruning includes sanitization and shaping. It should be performed in this way:

  1. First, remove any faded buds.
  2. Cut out damaged and shriveled leaves.
  3. Remove excess shoots that disturb the beauty and shape of the crown.
  4. Cut off long, bare branches at the bottom knot.

Before starting the procedure, sharpen and disinfect the instruments well. This will protect the culture from infections. To speed up the healing process, dust the cut with wood ash.

Pelargonium transplant in the fall

A similar procedure is needed for plants planted in open ground for the summer. In addition, in the fall, flowers need to be transplanted, in which the roots have grown strongly. Work should be started after the plant has faded, but they must be completed before the onset of the first frost. The process is carried out in this way:

  1. For the plant, use regular garden soil or geranium mix. But pre-calcine the soil in the oven.
  2. Lay a layer of expanded clay, broken brick or pebble drainage on the bottom of the pot.
  3. Gently remove the pelargonium from an old pot or open field. Examine the root system for rot, disease, or pests. Remove damaged areas.
  4. Place the flower in a new pot and carefully fill the voids with slightly damp soil.
  5. Tamp the soil a little, pour plenty of water over it.
  6. Place the pot in a dark place for 7 days.

After a week, you can rearrange the pelargonium on the lighted windowsill. In the future, the flower needs to be provided with normal care. But you can feed the culture only 2 months after the transplant.

Autumn is an important period in the cultivation of pelargonium. At this time, it is necessary to carry out the formative and sanitary pruning of the crop, and also to transplant the plants living in the open field. But for this you need to know how such events are held.
