A pedicure is a treatment or treatment for feet. Although pedicure may be associated with nail painting, it is a procedure that is also used to diagnose and treat certain foot diseases. When is it worth using a pedicure?

Pedicure is a treatment for the skin and nails of the feet, used for cosmetic or therapeutic purposes. The procedure is performed by qualified personnel using knowledge in the field of cosmetology or podology.

The appropriate form of pedicure is selected according to the client’s needs. Basic beautifying activities, such as shortening the nail plate, painting with varnish or applying masks or preparations to moisturize the skin of the feet, can be performed in virtually every beauty salon.

If there are corns or changes on the feet, which may be the result of various diseases (e.g. mycosis), it is recommended to visit a podiatrist, and sometimes also a specialist doctor. Some therapeutic foot treatments are also offered by beauty salons. However, it is always worth making sure that our ailments are dealt with by a specialist who is able to recognize lesions that require medical consultation.

Cosmetic pedicure – scope of the treatment

The classic cosmetic pedicure procedure is most commonly performed on women, because it includes activities such as washing off the varnish, shortening the nails, removing and removing cuticles, cleaning and filing the plate, as well as covering it with conditioners or fresh varnish. The procedure also allows you to take care of condition of the skin of the feet by using peelings, masks and other cosmetics with a softening effect. In this way, you can remove keratinized skin from the heels and soles of the feet.

Beauty salons use various antibacterial and normalizing exfoliation preparations, as well as moisturizing creams or cheese with the addition of vitamins or herbs. You can also find offers that also offer foot massages as part of the treatment.

It is worth using a cosmetic pedicure if you want to:

  1. improve the condition of the skin of the feet when it is dry and rough;
  2. nourish the skin of the feet to improve its appearance;
  3. remove keratinized epidermis;
  4. take care of the nail plate;
  5. get a professional effect of painting toenails with varnish;
  6. perform hybrid pedicure.

If we have problems with feet of unknown origin or changes that require specialist treatment, we should postpone cosmetic surgery and consult a doctor or a podiatrist.

Contraindications to cosmetic pedicure to m.in.:

Therapeutic pedicure – indications

For therapeutic pedicure (pedicure podologiczny) it is worth making a decision if we want to deal with changes in the feet that have a disease or may contribute to the development of various diseases. Professional assessment of the condition of the feet and nails may be performed by a podiatrist – specialist in foot diseases, but not a doctor. Nevertheless, he or she has the appropriate knowledge and diagnostic equipment to identify the likely source of the problem. If necessary, a podiatrist recommends consulting a physician of appropriate specialization, e.g. with an orthopedist, dermatologist, surgeon or diabetologist.

Main recommendations for a therapeutic pedicure have:

  1. corns, calluses, corns;
  2. cracked heels;
  3. ingrown nails;
  4. neglected feet.

You can also take care of your callus-prone feet yourself. We recommend Dr Stopa FLOSLEK softening liquid for corns and corns, which has exfoliating and strongly regenerating properties.

important

You can consult a podiatrist if you suspect mycosis of the feet or nails, have a problem with bunions, notice warts on the foot or feel pressure and pain in the foot or nails.

Before performing a therapeutic pedicure, the podiatrist conducts foot diagnostics – assesses their condition and asks questions about past or current diseases and their treatment so far. The pedicure treatment itself begins with cleaning the nails (e.g. washing off the nail polish) and feet. In the case of therapy with a podiatrist, it is not practiced soaking the feet in water, which distinguishes it from a cosmetic pedicure. The nail plates are cut and polished, the podiatrist also cleans the nail shafts and uses preparations to facilitate the removal of callous epidermis.

Basic therapeutic pedicure can be performed prophylactically in order to keep the feet in good condition. This form of care is recommended primarily for people exposed to foot problems or after treating certain diseases of this part of the body. This group includes:

  1. athletes (e.g., those who practice running sports);
  2. obese people;
  3. people with foot defects (flat feet, bunions);
  4. patients with certain chronic diseases (diabetes mellitus and diabetic foot, varicose veins and other vascular diseases causing changes in the feet);
  5. seniors struggling with various troublesome ailments;
  6. people who often wear uncomfortable shoes that may be required, for example for professional reasons.

To take care of your feet, it is worth using appropriate foot care after pedicure treatments. You can take advantage of the offer of foot care products available on Medonet Market. We recommend, for example, FLOSLEK brand preparations: SOS Ballerina heel care stick or Scrub foot care kit + Ballerina mask.

Medical pedicure can be performed every 4-6 weeks.

Therapeutic pedicure – additional treatments

In addition to basic care activities, medical pedicure also offers a range of treatments and therapies to remove specific foot ailments. Examples are the following treatments:

  1. removing prints, e.g. with special milling machines (You can order the MEDEL Expert manicure and pedicure milling machine at medonetmarket.pl);
  2. removal of viral warts by available methods, including pharmacological or by freezing them;
  3. treatment of cracking heels – softening preparations, podiatry chisels or special cutters are used, the therapy may require a series of treatments and follow-up visits;
  4. treatment of ingrown nails – proper trimming and grinding of the nail plate, application of a clamp;
  5. foot and nail fungus therapy – may require dermatological supervision, the therapeutic methods used are laser and pharmacological methods (antifungal preparations), mechanical removal of nail plate fragments strongly controlled by fungus, as well as nail prosthetics;
  6. foot care for people with diabetes who have developed a complication in the form of a diabetic foot.

Consultation with a podiatrist and a pedicure is an additional opportunity to obtain professional advice on the prevention of foot diseases. A podiatrist may suggest the use of orthopedic insoles for shoes or a visit to an appropriate specialist doctor, as well as provide advice on daily foot care.

Price of the pedicure treatment depends on the type of office (cosmetology or podiatry), as well as the possible need for additional medical or care procedures.

For a cosmetic pedicure, we will pay about PLN 80–120, and for a standard therapeutic pedicure, PLN 100–250. Additional costs are also associated with therapy aimed at treating a specific disease of the feet or nails.

Before you go to see a foot specialist, make sure your feet are clean and dry. You should also not paint your nails before going for a therapeutic pedicure – it’s best to remove the varnish a few days earlier.

In addition to basic hygiene, it is better to limit interference with their condition to a minimum, especially if it is the first visit to the office. Attempts to remove the troublesome changes on the feet and nails at home by home remedies may at most make it difficult for the podiatrist to make a quick diagnosis.

Therapeutic pedicure can last from one to two hours, but it all depends on the nature of the visit. Duration of the procedure will be longer if the procedure is not nursing and prophylactic, and instead treatment of a specific ailment is implemented.
