Pedicure
The pedicurist, often called a chiropodist, is a healer of the foot. He is consulted to improve his walking comfort, for mild infections of the skin or nails, or for movement exercises. He works in an office and receives patients directly to apply foot massages and targeted exercises.
What is a pedicure?
Le chiropodist is a specialist in foot care, but does not perform surgery such as an orthopedist. He helps the patient to treat pain in the foot, puts on custom-made orthopedic insoles, advises the patient on good hygiene or posture measures, or treats ingrown toenails and corns.
We advise him following a personal disorder, or following the request of his attending physician to accompany other diseases. It is in high demand by athletes and hikers who are the first to suffer the effects of foot pain on their practices, as are some workers where walking is necessary on a daily basis.
When should a pedicure be performed?
We consult a chiropodist for different reasons, all closely or remotely related to the foot. From general body posture, to nail infections.
To improve your posture
The installation of adapted insoles, or devices designed to measure for the patient, help to move better and to stand upright. These prostheses help reduce pain in the foot, but also those that result from it: back, hips, legs.
These treatments are in high demand by athletes or hikers.
To treat foot pain
The cors of the foot, swelling following excessive friction between the toes must be treated by a podiatrist, just like the thickenings on the side of the foot (calluses) and their aggravation if friction persists, durillons.
To improve your foot hygiene
Often foot problems are caused by poor hygiene. The pedicurist can therefore prescribe a range of treatments and provide advice to the patient. Prevention is better than cure !
To treat a nail
The ingrown toenails can become very disabling for the patient’s walking. Here again, the pedicure-podiatrist will be able to provide appropriate treatment.
The chiropodist will take the opportunity to treat the horn of the feet (excess skin), or cut nails that are too long to prevent them from entering the skin by impact against the toe of the shoe.
For special feet
Certain diseases, such as diabetes or osteoarthritis, or simply age, have consequences throughout the body. They can be treated on a case-by-case basis, starting with the foot. It is often the patient’s attending physician who will recommend the visit to the pedicurist to relieve these disorders.
What does the chiropodist do?
The chiropodist performs all kinds of foot care. It can thus help the patient to walk better by moving exercises, make him custom-made insoles, treat the toenails.
It is also in great demand by professional athletes, where the foot is very often used (football, running, athletics).
The patient’s diagnosis
During the visit, the practitioner will first make a diagnosis during the first session. This includes the dialogue with the patient, the analysis of his foot as well as the way of moving, and finally the taking of an impression or digital image of the foot.
Various treatments
Once the diagnosis is established, the pedicurist can prescribe different treatments depending on the patient’s problem. For example, he can offer the fitting of therapeutic insoles, teach him walking or posture exercises to be performed on a daily basis, or even the fitting of bandages / splints and medication.
How to become a chiropodist?
You become a pedicure-podiatrist in France by passing the pedicure-podiatrist diploma three years after obtaining the baccalaureate. The most classic route remains to pass a scientific baccalaureate, to better then pass medical studies and the entrance examination (PACES). The practitioner must also register with theNational Order of Chiropodists in order to be able to practice his profession.
Prepare for your visit to the pedicure
It is not necessary to have a prescription before seeing a pedicure, just make an appointment.
Good foot hygiene is of course a plus. Arriving at your visit relaxed will make the specialist’s job easier.
