Pear Dressy Efimova is a variety of Soviet selection, still willingly grown by amateur gardeners. Its constant “demand” determines not only the presentable appearance of the fruit, which the name clearly hints at. The variety is characterized by stable fruiting, very good yield and good immunity. It is undemanding in care, but, of course, there are some nuances of agricultural technology.
History of occurrence
Pear Dressy Efimova – a variety of authorship of the famous Soviet breeder V. A. Efimov, created in the mid-30s of the twentieth century at the experimental stations of the All- Selection and Technological Horticulture and Nursery. Now the originator is the “successor” of this organization – the Federal State Budget Scientific Institution of the Federal Scientific Center for Horticulture.
The “parents” of the Naryadnaya Efimova pear are extremely well-known varieties – the Tonkovetka and Lyubimitsa (or Favoritka) Clappa from the USA. She had to wait a long time for “official recognition”: the application for state registration was filed in 1963, the necessary tests dragged on for another 11 years. Since 1974, the pear tree Efimova has been listed in the State Register of Breeding Achievements.
Description pear Elegant Efimova with photo
The attractive “appearance” of the fruit is an important factor; gardeners inevitably pay attention to this when choosing. The tree near the pear variety Elegant Efimova cannot boast of its original “appearance”, it looks quite “standard”.
Tree
Pear Elegant Efimova reaches a height of 4,5-5 m, is distinguished by a fairly rapid growth rate. The rounded crown as it “grows up” turns into a pyramidal one. It cannot be called especially thickened.
The tree blooms in several “waves”. Such a rare feature allows, in the case of return spring frosts, to save at least part of future ovaries. Unopened buds die at -4 °C, flowers already at -1 °C.
Fruit
The fruits are symmetrical, classical “pear” shape, slightly elongated, without a funnel at the stem. Average weight – 110-135 g. Rare specimens – “record holders” gain weight 160-180 g.
The skin is smooth to the touch, slightly oily. The initial color is yellowish green, but it is almost completely hidden by a dark crimson or red-burgundy “blush”. Subcutaneous points are not large, multiple, clearly distinguishable.
Characteristic of the variety
From the description of the pear Naryadnaya Efimova, which is confirmed by the photo and reviews of gardeners, we can conclude that this variety is not unique, but “reliable” and “working”. Sometimes his “venerable” age is even considered as an advantage, because all the advantages and disadvantages of culture have long been well known.
Palatability
The pulp of the pear Elegant Efimova is not too dense, but very tender and juicy, slightly oily, creamy-white in color (it can be pinkish near the skin), fine-grained on the cut, slightly fragrant. The taste is sweet, but not bland, with a slight “refreshing” sourness and astringent aftertaste. Many gardeners who have tried fruit consider it close to dessert, although professional tasters do not agree with them. They rated the taste of the Naryadnaya Efimova pear with only four points out of five.
Terms of maturation
Pear Elegant Efimova in terms of ripening refers to autumn or early autumn. However, the fruits that ripen by about mid-September must be removed from the tree “green”. You can’t be late with this.
Productivity
The yield indicators of the pear Naryadnaya Efimova are rated as “average”. When grown on an industrial scale, about 30 tons per hectare are removed. Amateur gardeners can count on 40-50 kg from an adult tree.
You also need to consider that the first harvest will have to wait a long time. The precociousness of the elegant Efimova pear is average, the first fruits are removed from the tree 6-8 years after transplanting the seedling into open ground.
Frost resistance
The winter hardiness of the pear Efimova in the State Register is characterized as “average”. The experience of its cultivation suggests that a tree with a minimum of damage or no damage endures prolonged frosts down to -25 ° C, especially with sufficient snow cover.
Pear pollinators Smart Efimova
Variety Elegant Efimova is recognized as self-fertile, but without the presence of pollinators, it is unrealistic to collect good crops. In this capacity, pears are used:
- Lada;
- Favorite Yakovlev;
- Elena;
- Muscovite;
- Victoria;
- Bessemyanka;
- Red-sided;
- Marble;
- Autumn bergamot.
Growing regions
Pear Elegant Efimova is recommended for cultivation in the Central region. For areas with a more severe climate, it really lacks frost resistance. Therefore, in Our Country, the variety is in demand mainly in the middle lane.
From the republics of the former USSR, the elegant Efimova pear is grown in Ukraine, Moldova, Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Estonia. But there it is extremely popular can not be called.
Resistance to diseases
There is no “innate” immunity to fungal and other diseases in the pear Elegant Efimova. However, according to official variety tests, it is slightly affected by scab. Gardeners practically do not note cases of infection with moniliosis, rust, and bacterial burns.
Other diseases do not bother the tree too much, even in the absence of regular preventive treatments with chemicals. The same with pests – they don’t “highlight” the pear variety Naryadnaya Efimova, but there is no guarantee that the tree will not suffer from them during a massive “raid” on the garden.
Advantages and disadvantages
Pear Dressy Efimova was highly appreciated not only by “consumers”, but also by specialists. At the International Agricultural Exhibition in 1989 in Erfurt (Germany), the variety won a gold medal due to its high commercial and consumer qualities of the fruit.
Pros:
- very good resistance to pathogenic microflora and any pests;
- cold resistance sufficient for the growing region;
- stable annual fruiting;
- good crop yield, little dependent on the vagaries of the weather;
- fruit transportability;
- presentable “appearance”, outstanding taste of pears;
- destination versatility.
Cons:
- a sufficiently large height, which makes it difficult to care for the tree and harvest;
- the need to plant pollinating varieties;
- the importance of being able to accurately determine the moment of harvest in order to avoid damage to the fruit;
- average precocity.
Rules of landing
In central Our Country and regions with a similar climate, both autumn and spring planting of seedlings in open ground is practiced. The main thing is to choose the right place for the elegant Efimova pear. What is important for culture:
- good illuminance;
- free air circulation, but without cold drafts and sudden gusts of wind;
- fertile, but not too “heavy” soil, providing the possibility of normal air exchange;
- neutral pH of the substrate (5.5-6.0);
- groundwater lying 2 m below the surface of the earth or deeper.
A landing pit before planting a pear Elegant Efimova should “stand” for at least 2,5-3 weeks, so they always dig it in advance. A layer of drainage is required at the bottom, a nutrient mixture of their upper turf, humus and fertilizers is poured on top. The approximate dimensions of the pit are 70-80 cm in depth and in diameter.
The planting itself takes place according to the algorithm standard for a seedling of any fruit and berry crop. A minimum of 4 m is left between adjacent specimens of the pear Naryadnaya Efimova, the aisles are made even wider – 5-6 m.
Features of care
No deep knowledge in agricultural technology is required for growing pear Elegant Efimova. It completely manages with standard events:
- Watering. It is impossible to call a variety very drought-resistant: with a lack of moisture, both the presentability and the taste of pears Smart Efimova suffer. Therefore, in the absence of precipitation, the soil is watered every 8-10 days, in the heat – twice as often. It should also be borne in mind that the “critical” periods for a culture, when it especially needs water, are flowering and the formation of ovaries. The approximate norm is 60-80 liters.
- Top dressing. Trees begin to feed from the second season in the open field. The scheme is standard, includes four top dressings: nitrogen (at the beginning of the growing season) and three complex (immediately before flowering, 2-2,5 weeks after it and about a month after harvest).
- Weeding and loosening. It is necessary to loosen the near-stem circle after each watering, at the same time getting rid of weeds. However, if immediately after planting it is covered with mulch, these procedures can be abandoned. Another plus of this solution is that moisture from the soil will evaporate more slowly.
- Pruning. The crown of the smart pear Efimova is not too thick, but she needs sanitary pruning at the beginning and at the end of the season. A sparse-tiered configuration, which is formed in 3-4 seasons, is suitable for her.
- Preparing for winter. The necessary minimum of work to ensure wintering without damage is cleaning the near-stem circle from debris, updating mulch, whitewashing the bole. Top dressing is also required, if the autumn is dry and warm – water-charging watering. Whether the trunk needs additional protection, the gardener decides based on the long-term weather forecast.
Collection and storage
In central Our Country, the elegant Efimova pear ripens around mid-September. But they remove it 2-2,5 weeks earlier, in a state of “technical maturity”. Then the fruits must be kept in a cool room for several days so that they “gain” the most vivid and rich taste. “Readiness” is indicated by a change in skin tone from greenish yellow to amber burgundy.
The pears that have ripened on the tree, Naryadnaya Efimova, noticeably lose to those that ripen at home. They have pulp of an incomprehensible viscous-watery consistency, not at all sweet, with an unpleasant mealy aftertaste.
Like any pear, Elegant Efimova does not differ in keeping quality. The limit for her is 2,5-3 weeks. The fruits are kept in a refrigerator or cellar, basement, where you can provide:
- constant temperature 2-3 °C;
- air humidity is about 75-80%;
- lack of light and cold drafts.
Conclusion
Pear Smart Efimova is a variety practically devoid of significant shortcomings. This, as well as its merits, can be judged objectively: the rich experience of its cultivation, which has more than 50 years, allows. The general endurance of the tree and its ability to survive negative external influences is successfully complemented by annual fruiting, very good yields in terms of volume, and a presentable appearance of pears.
