Peach in the fall: how to prune

Old tree branches that are sick or dry take up the tree’s vital energy. To harvest the fruit annually from the tree, you need to prune the peach in the fall. Thanks to this procedure, with the arrival of spring, the energy of the tree will be directed to the branches with fruits, and you will receive a rich harvest.

Peach in the fall: types of pruning

There are several types of plant pruning, depending on your goals. It is important to remember that not all of its types can be carried out in the fall. Some are held in the summer, others in the spring. This is because some types of pruning can only be done in warm climates.

Not all types of peach pruning are suitable for fall.

There are 4 types of wood trimming:

  • Sanitary. The best time for it is autumn. It is carried out in order to remove dry and old branches, as well as branches affected by various diseases or parasites.
  • Formative. It is carried out to give the desired shape to the crown. As a rule, most often it is a bowl-shaped crown.
  • Anti-aging. It is needed in order to remove too large and thick branches that require a lot of nutrition and do not allow the tree to spend energy on branches with fruits.
  • Regulatory. It is carried out in order to thin out the crown of the tree. Thanks to this, sunlight penetrates the foliage better, and the fruits ripen evenly.

Before pruning a tree, understand exactly what you want to achieve. Then analyze if it is possible to carry out this procedure at the current time of the year.

For pruning in the fall, only sanitary pruning is suitable. All other types should be carried out during the warm season.

How to prune a peach correctly in the fall?

Stock up on the tools you need. You will need:

  • Secateurs

  • Garden saw

All tools must be sharply sharpened. If you do not take care of this, you may injure yourself or damage the tree.

Before trimming, it is imperative to disinfect and sterilize the instruments.

To properly prune the plant, you need to cut down all dry and diseased branches. It is necessary to cut them down to the trunk of the plant. It is important to make the bleed as smooth as possible, in which case it will heal faster and return to normal.
