Patellar fractures – treatment

They arise as a result of: direct injury, most often as multi-fragmentation and open fractures, or as a result of indirect injury, as the so-called avulsion fractures.

They cause damage to the knee extension apparatus with the inability to actively extend the knee.

Treatment

Fractures without displacement are treated conservatively with a plaster cast. Displaced fractures require surgical treatment with anatomical reconstruction of the articular surface and the knee extension apparatus.
