First of all, it is not customary to clean up on church holidays, especially the most significant ones. This prohibition came from ancient times, when cleaning was quite hard work, and holidays were supposed to enlighten your soul and pray. It was believed that working on an Orthodox holiday could cause a lack of money, illness and setbacks in the life of a family. Therefore, cleaning was recommended the day before, in order to celebrate the holiday in a clean house at a laid table.

So, house cleaning and laundry at Christmas is strictly prohibited. You can postpone these matters until January 14, that is, until the old New Year, when all the garbage is swept out and burned in the yard. Thus, evil spirits are expelled throughout the year.

On Annunciation and Palm Sunday, it is better to postpone chores until evening. You cannot work on the ground either, because, according to the old belief, on this day snakes crawl out.

Only the most essential things can be done during Easter week. And on Easter, all work should be postponed and devoted to the glorification of the holiday of the holidays, as well as caring for others.

The church does not recommend working on Ascension. According to the saying, people do not work on this day, but after the holiday they begin to work in the field.

Nowadays, the clergy do not impose a special prohibition on work on these days. Much worse is the job of messing around on a great day. If a person does not attend the morning service, does not pray for his neighbors on a church holiday, but indulges in idleness and laziness, this is a great sin. Although in the current situation it is still better not to go to church, but to stay at home for the safety of your own and those of your loved ones.

And by signs?

In addition to Christian restrictions, there are a lot of popular superstitions associated with homework that is not done according to the rules.

  • For example, it is believed that, cleaning at sunset, housewives, along with the dirt, wash out financial well-being, health, luck and other family benefits from their homes. Even if you had a party, do not rush to clean up after seeing the guests. Better to endure one night for the sake of family well-being.

  • Even worse do housework at night: you can attract evil spirits. Our ancestors believed that this could cause scandals in the house, and the tenants would feel a lack of energy.

  • It is advisable to wash the floors in the morning. Cleaning at this time will be easy, and the house will be clean and tidy. Better yet, start this process to the growing moon… When it begins to decline, household chores, on the contrary, should be completed.

  • Do not clean when someone from the family on the road: it may interfere with his journey.

  • Start sweeping from the farthest corner of the house… They don’t sweep over the threshold: luck will run away.

  • Don’t start cleaning on monday… The energy of this day is considered not very favorable for any endeavors. The most suitable time for household chores is the first half of Thursday and Saturday morning. And cleaning on Friday and Sunday evenings is not worth it. On the last day of the week, you need to rest and devote time to spiritual development.

By the way

Palm Sunday falls on the penultimate week of Lent. In honor of the holiday, you can slightly deviate from strict austerity: On this day, fish, seafood, hot food with the addition of oil are allowed. Considering that fasting lasts seven long weeks, this is a real holiday. It is even allowed to bake fish pie and buckwheat pancakes.

But the next week – Passionate – will be especially harsh. Orthodox Christians observe dry food until Sunday, when Easter comes.
