For many years, Paola Volkova read the history of art at VGIK and at the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors. It was her students who insisted that she put her lectures into a book. True, all the material did not fit in one volume. The first part, published three years ago, is devoted to the culture of Antiquity. The second book, which has just appeared, talks about 12 great works of art. Among them are Andrey Rublev’s «Trinity», and the painting «Ship of Fools» by Hieronymus Bosch, and Albrecht Dürer’s engraving «Melancholia», and even the Medici Chapel, built according to sketches by Michelangelo Buonarroti. These works are united by the fact that they were created by artists who, according to Paola Volkova, will have to be «unraveled by each generation anew.» And the answers will always be different. Art for her is a very personal thing. And its value, first of all, is that it is directly related to each of us. This means that each of us has the right to seek and find in immortal creations our own answers to questions that concern him. It is not surprising that the interpretation of Paola Volkova sometimes differs greatly from the generally accepted interpretation of the works of famous masters. It can delight or annoy, but it is unlikely to leave you indifferent.
