71 cases of rabies were recorded this year in Podkarpacie. They are ill, among others foxes, cats and martens – Janusz Ciołek, the deputy of the voivodeship veterinarian of Podkarpacie, informed on Tuesday.
Rabies was found in 57 foxes, five dogs, four cats, two roe deer and two martens, and a badger – said Ciołek.
He added that the majority of cases occurred in the following poviats: Strzyżowski – 13, Brzozowski – 11 and Przeworsk – 10. Nine cases were reported in the following poviats: Jasielski and Rzeszów.
After the launch of the campaign to distribute rabies vaccines in the region in 2002, the disease was almost non-existent. The increased risk of rabies in Podkarpacie appeared in the fall of last year and still remains.
In 2012, in the province In the Podkarpackie Voivodship, there were 213 cases of rabies, and two years earlier, only 13.
We hope that the situation will be improved by the completed vaccination of foxes against this disease – said Ciołek.
He recalled that almost half a million doses of the vaccine were laid out, 30 doses per square kilometer. The vaccination action will be repeated in the fall.
Rabies is an acute infectious disease. Among domestic animals, dogs and cats are the most susceptible to it. In nature, predators are the natural hosts. (PAP)
