Ovarian ligation – what complications can it cause?

Ovarian ligation is usually chosen by women who do not feel the maternal instinct and do not want to have children. This procedure is also chosen by women who do not want to have any more children. However, it should be kept in mind that ovarian ligation is usually irreversible. It also causes a lot of controversy in our country, where it is illegal. What are the ovarian ligation methods? What are its effects?

Ovaries they are tiny structures weighing about 6 grams located in the abdominal cavity. They are responsible for the production of eggs and the secretion of sex hormones: progesterone, estrogens, relaxin and androgens. Ovaries they are connected to the fallopian tubes through which the egg travels to the uterus. Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tubes. Ovarian ligation is one of the most effective methods of contraception, according to Pearl Index – the most effective. However, unlike other methods of contraception, such as oral hormone therapy or condoms, it causes irreversible changes that deprive a woman of the possibility of becoming pregnant.

Ovarian ligation is illegal in Poland, as long as the woman wants to do it at her own request. Executing physician ovarian ligation may be held liable and punishable by up to 10 years’ imprisonment. In turn, the doctor may decide to tubal ligation only in rare cases, e.g. when a woman is chronically ill and her body would not be able to report pregnancy or when there would be a high risk of giving birth to a seriously ill child.

Ovarian ligation – methods of carrying out the procedure

Ovarian ligation methods there are several. One of the safest and least invasive methods ovarian ligatures there is a laparoscopic method. It consists in cutting small areas of the skin in the area of ​​the navel. Through these incisions, the doctor introduces a specially constructed tube with a surgical tool. The first stage, i.e. the surgeon making the appropriate incisions to reach the ovaries, does not change. However, there are several methods that the medic performs ovarian ligation. This is e.g. clip sterilization – then the doctor places special clips on the fallopian tubes, which breaks the continuity of the fallopian tube. Currently, it is a rarely used method, but one of its advantages is the ability to reverse the change. Performing the procedure using this method requires the use of a contrast agent in order to check the continuity of the fallopian tube.

Another way ovarian ligatures jest the Mandler method. Simply put, it involves crushing the fallopian tube and then putting on some kind of ligature made of non-absorbed threads. This method can cause adhesions. The Pomeroy method, on the other hand, is a slightly modified version of the Mandler method, because apart from the fact that the fallopian tube is crushed, it is also completely removed.

One of the most effective methods ovarian ligatures jest Laboratory method. When using it, the doctor first makes special incisions in the membrane and then extracts the fallopian tubes, the fragments of which are cut out. Then the remainder of the fallopian tubes, as it were, joins the mesentery that supports the elements of the abdominal cavity and is sutured. In turn, during a fimbriectomy, the doctor cuts out the so-called the hyphae of the ovary and fallopian tubes and ligates them, and the ends of said hyphae are removed.

Ovarian Ligation – What Are Its Effects?
