During the press conference on Thursday (14.11/XNUMX), during which the fifth edition of the “Ovarian Diagnostics” campaign was launched, experts talked about why Poland needs changes in the organization of treatment of women with ovarian cancer and the importance of nutritional treatment in cancer therapy.
#Watch because ovarian cancer is still dangerous
This year’s “Ovarian Diagnostics” campaign, prepared by the Polish National Flower of Femininity Organization, chose #Observe – and don’t be surprised by ovarian cancer. It is one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in women.
— Every year in Poland approximately 3500 women develop ovarian cancer. It is a very dangerous opponent, as about 70 percent of patients, the cancer is diagnosed at an advanced stage, i.e. at the stage of the appearance of metastases to places distant from the ovary – explained Prof. dr hab. Mariusz Bidziński, med., gynecologist, oncologist and expert of the “Ovarian Diagnostics” campaign.
The data show that 2500 Polish women die from ovarian cancer each year. As the professor said, the effects of ovarian cancer treatment in Poland, measured by the percentage of women who survive five years, are 10 percentage points worse. compared to the EU average.
Women over 45 are at increased risk. Factors of the disease also include genetic predisposition, childlessness, early first menstruation and late menopause.

During the conference, prof. Bidziński emphasized that the effectiveness of treatment of Polish women with ovarian cancer is unsatisfactory compared to the European Union countries. The problem is not only the number of cases, but also the fact that the disease is detected at a late stage.
The symptoms of ovarian cancer are not very specific. These include: constipation, flatulence, pain in the lower abdomen, and a feeling of fullness in the abdomen. It is only when the tumor becomes larger that it gives symptoms such as vaginal bleeding and ascites.
This may be due to the fact that women do not do preventive examinations. The results of the survey were presented at the conference, which shows that 72 percent. of the interviewed women do not perform preventive examinations because they are afraid that they will be diagnosed with the disease. As much as 52 percent. of the respondents admitted that they did not have funds for a private visit to a doctor and therefore did not get tested. 47 percent did not have adequate knowledge about female diseases, and 44 percent admitted that they had to wait too long to see a doctor.
Starving ovarian cancer doesn’t help
The conference also discussed the impact of diet and nutrition on patients during the disease. Doctor Piotr Klimczak presented statistics showing that cancer is very often accompanied by cachexia (31-87%). In the last weeks of life, it occurs in up to 90 percent. sick. In 20 percent of these, malnutrition is the direct cause of death.
Klimczak also emphasized the importance of nutritional treatment in cancer patients. Malnutrition increases the incidence of infections, disturbs wound healing, increases morbidity and mortality, as well as extends hospital stays and increases treatment costs.
