Grzesiowski about outdoor masks: we should withdraw from this recommendation
We have been obliged to cover our nose and mouth in public spaces for over five months. Let us remind you that from October 10 last year, the use of face shields in Poland is obligatory. This means that we must wear masks, among others on the bus, on the tram, in the shop, in the bank, at the post office. It is also necessary in the open air: on the street, on roads and squares, in cemeteries, promenades, boulevards, vehicle parking places.
In the program «Onet. In the morning.” Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski, an immunologist and expert of the Supreme Medical Council for combating COVID-19, referred to the obligation to wear masks in the open air. – We should withdraw from this recommendation. Today many people are aware of this and do not wear face masks on the street. This is ruining our image as a country that uses a method that does not translate into security, but makes people’s lives difficult – he said directly.
The expert emphasizes that there is no scientific evidence that the pathogen spreads in the air where there are no people. Therefore, masks should be worn in situations where it is not possible to keep a safe distance (more than two meters). In an interview with Gazeta.pl, the immunologist reminded that the main source of COVID-19 infection is a sick person with whom we come into contact at a distance of less than 1,5-2 m or stay in a closed, poorly ventilated room.
Obligation to wear masks in the open air. Doctors comment
Opinion of dr. Grzesiowski on the use of masks in the open air is not unique. A few days ago, this issue was addressed in RMF FM by prof. Miłosz Parczewski, infectious diseases specialist and member of the Medical Council at the prime minister. Arguing this position, the expert explained: – The only study that came out last week that is significant epidemiologically is that there is no significant number of infections outside. So this wearing masks outside, we can say that it makes no sense.
Dr. Paweł Basiukiewicz, a cardiologist, specialist in internal medicine, head of the Observation and Infectious Department of the Western Hospital in Grodzisk, posted a comment on this issue on his Twitter account: «Continuing to keep the mask order outside jeopardizes the authority of the Ministry of Health in the Republic of Poland » – he wrote shortly.
Minister of Health on the obligation to wear masks in the open air
Last week, the health minister was asked on Twitter about the possibility of easing this restriction (the obligation to use masks in the open air). In response, the head of the health ministry indicated that “a systematic review published in February showed that less than 10 percent. reported SARS-CoV-2 infections took place outside »and that« with a high level of incidence those 10 percent. it matters”.
“Mr. Minister, maybe do as it was last year in the summer (of course, if the situation allows it), ie mask outside only when we are unable to keep our distance from others” – wrote the Internet user. “We will go this way with fewer cases” – wrote Minister Niedzielski in response. More on this in the article: Outdoor masks will be optional? Niedzielski: We will go this way. But there is a condition.
In “Onet Rano.” Dr. Paweł Grzesiowski referred to it: – It is a late decision – he said.
