Otrivin Duo nasal spray. How to use?

Otrivin Duzo is a drug used to treat symptomatic treatment of nasal congestion with a watery discharge in the course of a cold. The drug is a combined preparation that contains an alpha-adrenergic stimulant and a non-selective muscarinic antagonist. The preparation is in the form of a nasal spray and is available without a prescription.

Otrivin Duo is a combination preparation containing a drug that stimulates alpha-adrenergic receptors and a non-selective muscarinic antagonist.

Otrivin Duo – indications and dosage

Otrivin Duo is a nasal spray intended for the symptomatic treatment of nasal congestion in the course of a cold accompanied by a watery discharge.

Drug dosage

Otrivin Duo is a nasal spray.

  1. Adults. 1 dose in each nostril every 6 h, max. 3 times a day, not longer than 7 days.

Otrivin Duo and contraindications

Contraindications to the use of Otrivin Duo are:

  1. hypersensitivity to any component of the preparation, atropine or similar substances,
  2. glaucoma,
  3. dry rhinitis,
  4. use in people after transnasal pituitary removal, after procedures with access through the nose or the oral cavity, during which the cerebral meningitis may be damaged.

Otrivin Duo – warnings

  1. People under the age of 18 should not take this medicine.
  2. The drug is intended for nasal use only.
  3. The use of Otrivin Heavy requires special care and prior consultation with a doctor in patients with cardiovascular diseases (e.g. hypertension, angina pectoris), metabolic disorders (e.g. patients with diabetes, hyperthyroidism), prostatic hyperplasia, narrow passage through the ureter, with glaucoma, with phaeochromocytoma, with frequent epistaxis, with intestinal obstruction, in patients with cystic fibrosis.
  4. If the patient is allergic to certain adrenergic substances (e.g. adrenaline, ephedrine), side effects such as insomnia, dizziness, tremors, increased blood pressure, tachycardia (increased heart rate) may occur.
  5. Do not use for more than a week. Taking Trivin Duo for more than 7 days or in doses higher than recommended may lead to secondary vasodilation and to secondary and drug-induced rhinitis.
  6. There is no information on the safety of the preparation in people over 70 years of age.
  7. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult a doctor before taking the drug.
  8. The preparation may cause side effects, therefore people driving motor vehicles should check how they react to Otrivin Duo. This drug may impair psychophysical ability and the ability to drive and operate vehicles.

Otrivin Duo – with other drugs

  1. Do not use the drug during treatment with MAO inhibitors. The simultaneous intake of MAO inhibitors or taking them within 2 weeks after discontinuing the preparation may lead to an increase in blood pressure.
  2. Do not combine Otrivin Duo with tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants.
  3. Concomitant use of tricyclic or tetracyclic antidepressants or their use within 2 weeks after discontinuation of the preparation may increase the effect of xylometazoline contained in the drug.
  4. The use of Trivin Duo with drugs containing substances with anticholinergic effects (drugs used to reduce intestinal motility, drugs to treat motion sickness) may increase the effects of these drugs.
  5. It is recommended to consult a physician if you are taking any of the above-mentioned preparations.

Otrivin Duo – side effects

The use of Otrivin Duo may cause the following side effects:

  1. nose bleeds
  2. runny nose with a watery discharge
  3. congestion,
  4. burning sensation of the mucous membranes of the nose and throat,
  5. dryness of the mucous membranes of the nose and throat,
  6. sneezing,
  7. stuffy nose
  8. headache.

systemic effects:

  1. increased heart rate
  2. increase in blood pressure,
  3. palpitations,
  4. headaches,
  5. nausea,
  6. trembling,
  7. sleep disturbances,
  8. anxiety,
  9. dizziness and headaches,
  10. difficulty emptying the bladder,
  11. visual acuity disorders,
  12. increase in intraocular pressure,
  13. cause of
  14. pupil dilation,
  15. allergic reactions: skin rash, itching, shortness of breath, swelling of the tongue, lips and face, laryngospasm,

The use of Otrivin Duo for a longer period than recommended or the use of high doses may lead to secondary drug-induced rhinitis.
