Otrivin is a preparation used in family medicine and otolaryngology to treat conditions related to rhinitis. The drug affects the respiratory system – it reduces nasal congestion and unblocks a stuffy nose. Otrivin is available over the counter.

Indications for the use of Otrivin
- Adults and children from 6 years of age: 2-3 drops of solution. 0,1% or 1 dose of 0,1% spray 3-4 × / d in each nostril.
- Infants and children up to 6 years of age: 1-2 drops of solution 0,05% or 1 dose of 0,05% spray in each nostril 1-2 × / d (every 8-10 h). Do not administer more than 3 doses / day in each nostril.
Otrivin and contraindications and warnings
- Otrivin is intended for nasal use only.
- The use of the preparation requires special care and possible consultation with a doctor in the case of people with cardiovascular diseases (e.g. hypertension, angina), metabolic disorders (e.g. patients with diabetes, hyperthyroidism), prostatic hyperplasia, glaucoma . Do not use in patients taking antidepressants.
- Do not use the drug in patients with chronic or vasomotor rhinitis.
- The use of the drug for a longer period than recommended or in doses higher than recommended may lead to secondary vasodilation and to secondary drug-induced rhinitis.
- Due to the content of benzalkonium chloride, the preparation may cause irritation of the nasal mucosa.
- Do not use in pregnant women.
- Before using during breastfeeding, consult your doctor; there are no data on the safety of its use during this period.
- In the case of long-term use or use in high doses, adverse cardiovascular and central nervous system effects may occur, which may affect the ability to drive and operate vehicles.
- If this occurs, you should not drive or operate a motor vehicle.
- Do not use during treatment with MAO inhibitors or tricyclic antidepressants.
- Avoid use with other sympathomimetics such as ephedrine or pseudoephedrine.
- The following may occur: congestion, burning sensation in the nose and throat, dry nasal mucosa, sneezing.
- Very rarely systemic effects: increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, palpitations, headache, nausea, tremors, sleep disturbances, allergic reactions (skin rash, itching, dyspnoea, angioedema).
- Using the drug for a longer period than recommended or using high doses may lead to secondary drug-induced rhinitis.
