Ospamox powder – when should it be used?

Ospamox is a drug used, inter alia, in in otolaryngology, dermatology, gynecology and infectious diseases for the treatment of infections of various kinds. The preparation has an anti-infective and bactericidal effect. Ospamox is available as granules and can only be obtained with a prescription.

Indications for the use of Ospamox

The active substance of Ospamox is amoxicillin, an antibiotic with a bactericidal effect. The preparation is used as a preventive measure in endocarditis and as part of peptic ulcer therapy, as well as in the treatment of infections:

  1. upper respiratory tract infections
  2. acute otitis media,
  3. acute sinusitis
  4. inflammation of the palatine tonsils,
  5. lower respiratory tract infections: exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia,
  6. lower urinary tract infections: cystitis,
  7. early form of Lyme disease associated with erythema migrans.

Dosage of the drug Ospamox

  1. Adults (including the elderly) and children over 12 years of age weighing more than 40 kg: the usual dose is 0,75-3 g (750-3000 mg) per day, divided into 2-3 doses.
  2. Prevention of endocarditis: 2-3 g 1 hour before surgery.
  3. Children (weighing less than 40 kg): the doctor will determine the dosage individually depending on the child’s weight and the severity of the infection. Usually, 40-90 mg / kg body weight is used daily in 2-3 divided doses (not exceeding the dose of 3 g per day). In severe infections, your doctor may increase the dose to 90 mg / kg body weight per day /
  4. Tonsillitis: 50 mg / kg body weight daily in 2 divided doses.
  5. Early stage Lyme disease (isolated erythema migrans): 50 mg / kg body weight daily in 3 divided doses for 14-21 days.

In all groups of patients with renal failure, the doctor will prescribe a dose depending on the degree of renal failure and the severity of the infection:

  1. If the creatinine clearance is greater than 30 ml / min, the dosage schedule does not need to be changed.
  2. If the creatinine clearance is less than 30 ml / min, the doctor will usually extend the dosing interval or reduce the dose.
  3. If the creatinine clearance is between 10-30 ml / min, your doctor will usually recommend a dose of 500 mg every 12 hours for adults, and 40 mg / kg every 15 hours for children weighing less than 12 kg.
  4. If the creatinine clearance is less than 10 ml / min, the usual dose is 500 mg every 24 hours for adults and 15 mg / kg body weight every 24 hours for children weighing less than 40 kg.

Patients undergoing dialysis require a special dosing schedule. In patients with hepatic impairment, if there is no renal impairment, no dosage adjustment is necessary.

Ospamox and contraindications

A contraindication to the use of Ospamox is hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients or to other beta-lactam antibiotics (other penicillins, cephalosporins).

Ospamox – warnings about the drug

  1. The excretion of amoxicillin is delayed in patients with renal insufficiency.
  2. Caution should be exercised in preterm and infants, and their kidney and liver function should be monitored.
  3. Anaphylactic shock and other allergic reactions occur rarely during treatment with Ospamox.
  4. Ospamox should not be used in patients with viral infections, acute lymphocytic leukemia or infectious mononucleosis.
  5. Particular care should be taken in pregnant and lactating women. Stop feeding if the infant develops diarrhea or a rash.
