Orungal is a broad-spectrum antifungal drug. It is taken orally in the form of capsules. Each contains 100 mg of the active ingredient – itraconazole. It is sold in packs of 4 and 28. It is a reimbursed drug that is issued on a prescription and only with a prescription.
How does Orungal work?
Orungal contains the active substance itraconazole. It is an organic substance with broad antifungal activity. It works by disrupting the synthesis of the fungal cell wall (it disrupts the production of its component ergosterol). Itraconazole is active against a wide variety of fungi. They include dermatophytes, i.e. fungi causing mycoses of the skin and its appendages: Trichophyton spp., Microsporum spp. And Epidermophyton floccosum. It is also active against yeasts of the genus Candida and Cryptococcus neoformans, Malassezia spp., Trichosporon spp. And Geotrichum spp.
Sensitive to the action of Orungal are also, inter alia, Aspergillus spp. And Histoplasma spp., Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, Sporothrix schenckii, Fonsaecaea spp., Cladosporium spp., Blastomyces dermatitidis, Coccidiodes marsei allicilli. The drug is not active against the Zygomycetes (Zygomycetes), Fusarium spp., Scedosporium spp. And Scopulariopsis spp.
How is Orungal used?
The absorption of Orungal is influenced by the acidity level in the stomach – during treatment with Orungal you should not take drugs that affect the production or neutralization of stomach acid. Orungal interacts with many other preparations, so before taking it, please inform your doctor exactly what other medications you are taking and read the leaflet in detail. Dosage and treatment time are different for different types of mycoses. Treatment with Orungal is used in the case of fungal infections of the genital organs, skin and its appendages, mucous membranes, eyes and for the treatment of systemic mycoses.
Contraindications and precautions when using Orungal
Orungal is absolutely contraindicated during pregnancy and should not be used by nursing mothers. It has an impact on psychomotor performance. Hypersensitivity to itraconazole or any of the excipients is an absolute contraindication. It is also not used in patients with heart problems. Orungal contains sucrose, therefore it cannot be used by people with impaired glucose or galactose absorption, e.g. patients with galactosemia – a genetic disease that prevents the metabolism of galactose.
Orungal may cause a number of side effects, including the most common ones are headaches, nausea and abdominal pain, however, please read the leaflet carefully as it may cause more serious side effects, even such as temporary hearing and vision disturbances, and even liver damage. rarely pancreatitis.
