Orsoten – instructions for use

Orsoten - instructions for use

The drug belongs to the group of drugs for the treatment of obesity, is an inhibitor of gastrointestinal lipases. The drug acts in the stomach and small intestine, inactivating fat-splitting enzymes. Triglycerides of dietary fats due to the action of the drug are no longer split into monoglycerides and free fatty acids, they are not absorbed into the blood through the walls of the stomach and intestines. The number of calories entering the body decreases, which leads to a decrease in body weight.

The drug acts exclusively in the digestive tract, without entering the general bloodstream. Not split fat enters the feces after 1-2 days, and together with them is excreted from the body. Orsoten is available in the form of white capsules containing microgranules or a mixture of granules with powder. The return to the initial state of the metabolism of the digestive tract occurs 2-3 days after discontinuation of the drug.

Ingredients of Orsoten:

  • The main active ingredient is orlistat;

  • Excipient – microcrystalline cellulose;

  • Capsule body substances – water, titanium dioxide, hypromellose.

Pharmacokinetics

  • Absorption – the drug has low absorption. In the blood plasma, Orsoten is not determined already 8 hours after ingestion.

  • Distribution – the drug binds to albumin and plasma lipoprotein.

  • Metabolism – occurs in the intestinal wall, forming inactive metabolites.

  • Withdrawal – complete elimination occurs after 3-5 days, through the intestines – 97%, through the kidneys – 2% of the accepted dose of Orsoten. The rest of the drug is excreted in the bile.

The total duration of the medication is not longer than 2 years.

Cases of overdose of Orsoten have not been recorded even with an increase in the number of single doses by 4-6 times. Clinical trials have shown that this effect persisted for 2 weeks at the higher dose.

Side effects

Most of the side effects are associated with the digestive organs, specifically – with impaired absorption of fats. In most cases, they appear in the first 3 months from the start of taking the drug, they have a low intensity. With prolonged treatment, side effects become less intense or disappear altogether.

Side effects:

  • Flatulence, combined with the release of a small amount of feces;

  • Oily stool;

  • Frequent urge to defecate, fecal incontinence;

  • Pain in the projection of the stomach and intestines;

  • Hepatitis;

To reduce the intensity of side effects, you need to follow a low-calorie diet. A diet containing a minimum of fat will help to completely avoid adverse reactions. A low-calorie diet while taking Orsoten contains no more than 30% of the calories obtained from fat. It is advisable to distribute this amount of fat-containing foods over 3 meals.

Interaction with other drugs

  • With the simultaneous use of anticoagulants (Warfarin) – a decrease in the level of prothrombin, a change in hemostatic parameters;

  • With the simultaneous administration of Pravastatin, its concentration in the blood plasma increases by 30%;

  • When taken simultaneously with fat-soluble vitamins (A, E, K, D), it reduces their absorption, a time interval between taking Orsoten and these drugs is required for at least 2 hours;

  • When taken simultaneously with Cyclosporine, the level of the latter in the blood plasma decreases.

To fully supply the body with the vitamins and microelements it needs, which cannot be obtained due to a violation of lipid metabolism, during treatment with Orsen, you need to take multivitamin complexes.
