Orofar is the drug most often used in the case of throat infections accompanying a cold or flu. How does it work on the body? Are there any contraindications to its use? We check what forms of Orofar we distinguish and how much they cost.
Orofar – general characteristics of the drug
The main task of Orofar is to fight the viruses, bacteria and fungi that are responsible for infections and the accompanying inflammation of the throat. The active substances of Orofar are benzoxonium chloride and lidocaine hydrochloride. Its composition also includes accompanying substances that have a local anesthetic effect.

Orofar – composition and form of the drug
Orofar is available on the pharmaceutical market in three forms:
- Orofar Junior lozenges – the active substances are lidocaine hydrochloride and benzoxonium chloride, and the excipients are sorbitol, microcrystalline cellulose, macrogol 6000, corn starch, sodium saccharin, citric acid monohydrate, sodium chloride, orange flavor and magnesium stearate;
- Orofar Max hard capsules – the active substances are lidocaine hydrochloride and cetylpyridinium chloride, and the excipients are peppermint oil from peppermint leaves, Schimmel’s peppermint oil, levomenthol, acesulfame potassium, maize starch, citric acid monohydrate, macrogol 6000, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium sorbitol and sorbitol sorbitate;
- Orofar Total Action oral spray – the active substances are lidocaine hydrochloride and benzoxonium chloride, and the excipients are ethanol 96% v / v, glycerol, peppermint oil, menthol, 0,1N hydrochloric acid and purified water.

Orofar – indications for use
Orofar is most often used for throat infections (sore throat, pharyngitis or laryngitis), as well as oral cavity infections, which include, first of all, infections and inflammation of the gums, as well as aphthae. Orofar may be prescribed by a doctor for strep throat.
Orofar Total Action – how should you dose?
Orofar Total Action can be used by both adults and children from the age of six. The spray should be sprayed on the back of the throat, holding your breath. Adults should use Orofar Total Action at least 3-6 times a day. Children may use the spray only under adult supervision three times a day.
It should not be used by children who cannot hold their breath, as the risk of choking increases. There may also be temporary problems with swallowing.
When should you take Orofar Junior?
Like Orofar Total Action, Orofar Junior lozenges can be taken by both adults and children. Remember not to chew or swallow them. Adults can use 1-2 tablets every three hours. In case of a strong infection, it is possible to increase the dose to 1-2 tablets every two hours.
Children should take a maximum of 6 tablets a day. Orofar Junior lozenges should not be given to children under 6 years of age, which, as in the case of Orofar Total Action, may increase the risk of choking or choking.

Special precautions apply mainly to the elderly (over 60 years of age) who have a tendency to choke. Also, if the symptoms of the infection do not go away within three days, see your doctor.
After two weeks of taking Orofar, the tongue and teeth may turn brown, but this is a temporary phenomenon. In the case of open wounds in the mouth or throat, use the drug with caution, especially Orofar Total Action aerosol, which must not be sprayed around the eyes.
As lidocaine can cause numbness in the mouth and throat and therefore difficulty in swallowing, Orofar must not be taken before or during a meal. After taking the drug, you can drive a car and operate machinery.

Are there any contraindications to the use of Orofar?
The main contraindication to the use of Orofar is hypersensitivity to the active or excipient substances contained in the Orofar Total Action aerosol or Orofar Junior lozenges. It should also be remembered that the drug contains sorbitol, so in case of sugar intolerance, please inform your doctor or pharmacist.
Orofar – side effects of use
Among the side effects of using Orofar, discomfort in the mouth is the most frequently indicated. However, hypersensitivity is very rare – this includes swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, as well as shortness of breath, rash and itching.

Can Orofar be overdosed?
Although the risk of overdosing with Orofar is minimal due to the small amounts of active substances contained in the drug, care should be taken when taking the drug. Swallowing large amounts of benzoxonium chloride may cause nausea and vomiting, which should be treated symptomatically.
Poisoning with lidocaine hydrochloride most often occurs during intravenous infusions, having a direct effect on the central nervous system and the cardiovascular system. After swallowing a large dose of lidocaine, convulsions are observed in the patient, so he should be under the care of a doctor so that the respiratory and cardiovascular functions can be monitored, as well as the seizures themselves.
Can Orofar be taken during pregnancy and breastfeeding?
Due to the lack of sufficient data on the effects of benzoxonium chloride and lidocaine hydrochloride, pregnant women should not use Orofar. However, studies have established that a small amount of lidocaine may pass into breast milk, but the potential risks to the baby are unlikely. Therefore, caution should be exercised when using the drug.
How should Orofar be stored?
Both Orofar Total Action and Orofar Junior aerosols should be kept out of the reach of children. It should be a room that cannot be reached by the sun’s rays. The drug should not be used after the expiry date.
