To enjoy healthy teeth and gums, and to prevent the development of serious diseases, remember about

  1. proper oral hygiene with self-assessment of the condition of the gums;
  2. regular dental check-ups;
  3. talking to the dentist about possible health problems visible in the oral cavity;
  4. correct eating habits.

Poor oral health may affect the course of diabetes or be its first symptom.

That is why maintaining oral hygiene habits is so important. Adequate hygiene can help you protect your oral health and better control your diabetes, and through proper periodontal treatment you can influence the course of your diabetes.

Periodontal disease raises blood pressure. Treating periodontal disease can lower cholesterol and blood pressure. There is a proven relationship between tooth loss, independent of significant and well-known risk factors, and an increased risk of heart attack.

Oral disease will not be the only cause of cognitive impairment, but the developing inflammation may accelerate it as the bacteria that cause periodontitis penetrate the brain.

Oral diseases and pregnancy

Untreated inflammation and diseases of the mother’s teeth:

  1. increase the risk of premature birth, which may be caused by an increased blood flow in the gums;
  2. may have an influence on the low birth weight of the fetus;
  3. they favor the early colonization of the child’s oral cavity with bacteria and the occurrence of early childhood caries;
  4. bacteria from periodontal tissues can enter the bloodstream and then infect the placenta and the fetus. Microbes can also secrete harmful toxins, and pro-inflammatory cytokines stimulate an inflammatory reaction that is dangerous for the fetus.

Which dental procedures should be performed at the National Health Fund? Here are the dentist’s recommendations

  1. Pregnant women who do not require dental treatment should visit the dentist’s office at least twice during pregnancy and every 2 months after the baby is born.
  2. Dental treatment can be performed in any trimester of pregnancy. It is best to perform treatments in the second and third trimesters (preferably between 13-21 weeks).
  3. Any acute condition requires immediate medical intervention, regardless of the trimester of pregnancy.
  4. Gynecologists should remind women to have a dental check-up during their pregnancy as part of the mandatory examination.
  5. Women should not be afraid of dental treatment during pregnancy, they should definitely have a checkup, and take special care of oral hygiene and proper eating habits.

Oral cancer

How can I reduce the risk of oral cancer? The most important elements are:

  1. regular and proper oral hygiene,
  2. self control,
  3. regular visits to the dentist,
  4. regular examinations,
  5. correct diet,
  6. elimination or significant reduction of alcohol consumption, smoking or chewing tobacco.

If you observe at home:

  1. any disturbing changes in the mouth, lips, tongue, gums, cheeks (red or white spots, lumps, lumps, sores),
  2. constant pain in the mouth
  3. numbness and tingling of the tongue, trismus,
  4. problems with chewing, eating, drinking, speaking,
  5. loose teeth, swelling that makes wearing dentures uncomfortable.

Go for an urgent consultation with a dentist. This is especially true for those changes that persist for more than 2 weeks.

The project “Health begins in the mouth” was initiated during the Virtual Dental Exhibition by CEDE with a debate with the participation of experts who emphasized the importance of the problem of the impact of the condition of the oral cavity on the health of the whole organism. The result of the discussion was the signing of a petition on further joint educational activities, both among patients and the medical community. The aftermath of the declaration is the presented brochure and a series of activities planned as part of the Patient Zone during CEDE 2021 in Łódź. The project is carried out as part of the campaign “Poland says #aaa” by the Polish Dental Society, the Institute of Patient Rights and Health Education, patient organizations and the Exactus company.
