Opipramol is a substance that is used in antidepressants. However, its effects are different from those of this group. The drug is characterized by low anticholinergic activity. It works by blocking the histamine H1 receptors. It binds to 5-HT2A serotonergic, dopaminergic D2 and adrenergic receptors to a lesser extent than other antidepressants.

Opipramol has a gentle antidepressant effect and also has a calming effect. It exhibits mood-enhancing properties, and can also induce sleep, especially when taken in the evening.

Opipramol is recommended for the treatment of depressive disorders, especially generalized and somatic anxiety disorders.

Contraindication to the use of the drug is an allergy or hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of its ingredients. Other contraindications are:

  1. intoxication with alcohol or other psychoactive substances (drugs, antidepressants),
  2. trouble urinating,
  3. alcohol convulsions – delirium,
  4. glaucoma, especially if left untreated and with angle-closure glaucoma,
  5. prostatic hypertrophy with residual urine (for men),
  6. paralytic intestinal obstruction,
  7. heart problems such as atrioventricular block and conduction disturbances
  8. parallel use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors.

In some situations the patient should exercise extreme caution when taking Opipramol. They are:

  1. prostatic hypertrophy without residual urine,
  2. liver or kidney problems,
  3. epilepsy,
  4. brain damage,
  5. alcoholism,
  6. diseases with symptoms of convulsions.

You may experience a fever or a sore throat while taking this medicine. In such situations, the patient should be under the constant supervision of a physician and regularly perform morphology tests. The drug may affect the blood picture.

Additionally, regular liver check-ups should be performed during treatment with Opipramol. Some preparations contain glucose, therefore people with glucose intolerance should avoid or exercise particular caution while taking the drug.

During pregnancy, each drug should be used after consulting a doctor. The preparation may have effects on the fetus or food. The drug should not be used during the first trimester of pregnancy and breastfeeding.
