For the moment, bird flu that has affected humans has fortunately resulted in few cases of serious or fatal illnesses since they are only contracted during direct contact between infected birds and humans. But specialists fear that one day an avian flu virus will become capable of being transmitted from person to person, which could be very serious if the virus is very pathogenic.
