Onza

In our time, Onza is translated from Spanish as “ounce”. But two hundred years ago, this word was called a coin – a doubloon, which was minted from pure gold mined in Mexican mines. So the crown on a bottle of Onza tequila is not an ordinary marketing ploy, but an exactly repeated image from a coin that was in use during the heyday of the Spanish Empire. And Onza de Oro is both an Onza Gold tequila and a “quadruple” doubloon. In general, already by the name it is clear that before us is not an alcoholic drink, but a real treasure.

The contents of the bottle with the crown will not disappoint even the most picky connoisseur. After all, “Onza” is a “mixto” tequila, that is, according to Mexican standards, it must contain at least 51% alcohol from blue agave juice. But Ramon Masoliver, the founder and first owner of Beveland, was not a stingy person: the must from which Onzu is made contains 80% agave sugars. Moreover, the drink is practically devoid of the sharp alcohol smell characteristic of many tequilas of this class.

History of Onza Tequila

In 1979, the Spanish entrepreneur Ramon Masoliver created the Masoliver Grup company. The company was engaged in the sale of Catalan wines, first in Spain, and then abroad. Over time, Senor Masoliver appreciated how profitable it is to produce alcohol himself. In 1994, he founded the Beveland SA company, the purpose of which was the manufacture and export of alcohol: whiskey, rum, liqueurs and tequila. In particular, Beveland owns several brands of tequila, the most famous of which are Tres Sombreros and Onza. In 2009, all companies belonging to the Masoliver family merged into the Masoliver Olivas holding.

Onza tequila is produced at one of the most famous Mexican distilleries – Cooperativa Tequilera La Magdalena. This distillery was built in 1998 and is equipped with the latest technology. The local tequileros are famous as unsurpassed masters of their craft.

The distillery is located in the state of Jalisco, in the vicinity of the city of Magdalena. Water from local sources is very soft, it gives the tequila a pleasant delicate taste. In the manufacture of the drink, special yeast is used, the recipe of which is a trade secret of the Beveland company.

In 2010 Señor Masoliver died, leaving the holding to his children, Joel and Alejandra. Onza tequila fully justified its name: it, as befits a treasure, brought the company a good profit. The popularity of the drink is increasing year by year. In 2015, the holding’s president, Joel Masoliver Olivas, announced that three new Onza tequila varieties would soon be on sale: Blanco, Reposado and Añejo. These will be premium drinks, 100% blue agave spirits. The design of bottles and labels for new varieties of tequila was developed by the Russian branding agency Upˆrise.
