Onychomycosis – Our doctor’s opinion

Onychomycosis – Our doctor’s opinion

As part of its quality approach, Passeportsanté.net invites you to discover the opinion of a health professional. Dr Dominic Larose, emergency physician, gives you his opinion on theonychomycose :

Without wanting to discourage you, I must tell you that even with good treatment, total eradication of onychomycosis is difficult and recurrence is frequent. Unfortunately, many people have to come to terms with their infected fingernails.

My advice: if you think you have a nail infection, see you quickly to treat the infection early on. If necessary, also treat your athlete’s foot before it spreads to your nails.

I do not prescribe medication until I have proof that it is indeed a fungus infection. The best treatment, oral terbinafine, can cause (although very rarely) a very severe liver damage. Above all, I do not want to unnecessarily expose a patient to this risk.
