Promising research

Research published at the annual meeting of The Endocrine Society in San Diego confirmed the extraordinary properties of Allium Cepa onion extract.

Researchers administered metformin (an antidiabetic drug) and variable doses of onion extract to three groups of rats with medically induced diabetes, namely: 200, 400 and 600 mg / kg / day. The purpose of the study was to test whether these doses would have the ability to increase the effect of the medicine. Additionally, both metformin and onion extract were given to the non-diabetic group (normal blood sugar). The next two groups received neither onion extract nor metformin, one was diabetic rats, the other was without.

The extract used for the experiment was raw, prepared from onions available on the local market.

Help for diabetics

They found that two doses of onion extract: 400 and 600 mg / kg / day strongly reduced fasting blood sugar in diabetic rats. Additionally, onion extract lowered total cholesterol levels in diabetic rats at the two higher doses of the extract.

Onion extract increases appetite?

Onion extract leads to weight gain in nondiabetic rats, but not in diabetic rats. Increasing the metabolic rate seems to increase appetite, which can lead to an increase in food intake.

The results of these studies are optimistic. Onions can have great potential in the treatment of diabetes and the prevention of cardiovascular disease in diabetics, and is cheap and readily available.
