Onion variety Classic: description and photo

Onion Classic was created for cultivation for industrial purposes. A stress-resistant plant produces seeds suitable for further propagation, has a semi-sharp taste, is stored for a long time, and practically does not get sick. All these qualities are a priority for gardeners, so the variety is grown not only in the fields, but also in small private plots.

History of origin

The originator of the onion Classic is Agrofirma Poisk LLC, on its basis in 2012 they created an improved version of the Chalcedony variety with stronger immunity and a yield indicator. In 2016, it was included in the State Register with recommendations for cultivation in the open field of the North Caucasus region. In the Central strip, it is possible to cultivate onions in unheated greenhouses, followed by removal (at the end of spring) from the cover structure.

Description and characteristics of onion varieties Classic

Classic is an early ripe variety that ripens in 100–120 days from the moment of germination. An annual crop is grown from seeds. To obtain sevka, the growing season takes two years.

Onion Classic sprouts at +3–5 0C. In the loop stage, it does not tolerate temperature drops to -1–30 C, seedlings die. Therefore, in a temperate climate, the plant during the initial phase of development is protected from possible return frosts.

Onions are drought-resistant; during the ripening period, turnips can do without water for a long time. During the formation of green mass, moisture deficiency is undesirable. The plant begins to lag behind in development, this affects the yield. Onions can be sown or planted directly in the garden for early greens or grown in seedlings.

Productivity

Harvesting begins when the leaves become dry and lie down on the surface of the soil. Classic ripens from mid-July to early August. The timing depends on how warm and humid the summer was. The variety is classified as high-yielding. From 1m2 collect 9-10 kg. If compared with Chalcedony, on the basis of which the Classic variety was obtained, then the first gives no more than 8 kg from the same area.

Disease and pest resistance

If the onion grows in an open area with light soil (without stagnant water), then the plant practically does not get sick. If these conditions are not met, the variety may suffer from downy mildew (peronosporosis). Fungal infection is determined by spots on the leaves, the areas turn yellow, then turn gray.

To get rid of the disease, the following drugs are used: Bordeaux liquid, Fitolavin, Fitosporin. At high humidity, the neck rots, it will not work to save the plant, the onion is removed from the site in order to preserve the rest of the specimens, and watering is reduced to a minimum.

On the Classic variety, the onion fly or moth parasitizes. The pest is eliminated by treating the entire planting with one of the preparations: Summer Resident, Iskra, Karate Zeon, Metaphos.

Attention! In the rainy season, on the ground with poor water permeability, the onion is affected by the nematode.

It is useless to fight the pest with chemical means. Sick plants are destroyed, the rest are carefully examined. The infected area is not used for planting for 3-4 years.

The soil is chosen aerated, light, fertile, without stagnant moisture. The composition of the soil should be slightly alkaline, if necessary, it is adjusted in the fall.

Growing onion Classic from seeds

Onion planting material Classic is harvested in the third decade of August. For sowing, use large seeds that were stored in a dry place. You can plant immediately in open ground (approximately in mid-April).

Landing algorithm:

  1. The site has been prepared since autumn, dug up, raised the bed by about 20 cm and covered with compost in the top layer.
  2. At the beginning of the season loosen, remove the remaining weed roots.
  3. Make longitudinal furrows at a distance of 20–25 cm, 2 cm deep.
  4. The material is disinfected in a solution of manganese. Sowed.
  5. After germination, the onions are thinned out. Between sprouts maintain an interval of 5-6 cm.

You can get seedlings in advance. The laying of seeds is carried out in March. The dates are adjusted taking into account the fact that in two months the Classic onion needs to be planted in open ground. Grow seedlings in a standard way. Provide lighting for 13 hours. Watered as the top layer dries, kept at a temperature of + 20–220 C. Planted on a bed at a distance of 5-6 cm from each other. They stand 20-25 cm between the furrows. They are deepened to the level at which they grew in the container.
