Onion “Exibition”: growing, planting onions
The Exibition onion is the result of the work of Dutch breeders. Its size amazes the imagination – a mature bulb reaches a mass of 500-800 g. But size is not the only advantage, it has an unusual sweetish taste and is devoid of the sharp bitterness inherent in common varieties of onions. The harmonious combination with the taste of other products makes Exibichen an ideal ingredient for salads and appetizers.
The vegetative period of Exibichen is at least 80 days, but in some regions the summer does not last so long, so it is recommended to grow onions in seedlings. Growing seedlings from seeds is the easiest way to get a mature and bountiful harvest.
You can do this as follows:
- Start planting seeds at the end of February. Pre-soak the seeds for 2-3 days in warm water, then decontaminate them in a manganese solution.
- It is better to purchase land for planting in the store. Plant the seeds in moist soil, to a depth of 1 cm and cover with foil on top.
- After emergence, remove the film and provide the seedlings with additional light. Daylight hours for seedlings should last at least 12 hours.
- A week after germination, start feeding the seedlings with complex mineral fertilizers. As they grow, start bringing the seedlings out into the open air for hardening.
- Planting seedlings in the ground should be done only after the threat of morning frost has disappeared.
Since the bulbs grow large, when planting it, it is recommended to make the distance between them 15-20 cm, and between the rows at least 30 cm.
Peculiarities of onion cultivation “Exibishen”
The cultivation technology of this variety has its own characteristics. Not only the quantity of the crop, but also its quality depends on the correctness of your actions.
The growing process includes the following steps:
- Organization of proper watering – the variety equally badly tolerates both lack and excess of moisture. Do not water the plantings with cold water, it should be equal to the ambient temperature.
- Weeding – mulching and loosening the row spacing after watering the plants will help to harvest the weeds. Loosen the soil with care so as not to damage the roots of the onion.
- Protection against pests and diseases – special preparations can be used for this. In addition to chemicals, there are more gentle methods, for example: planting carrots next to onions, which have pest repellent properties.
- Top dressing – it is recommended to carry out at least 3 times per season. An excess of fertilizer can negatively affect the quality of the onion, so you need to feed the plant as it develops.
Watering should be stopped about 2 weeks before harvest. Collect onions only in dry weather. Dry it well before storing it in storage.
By following these tips, you can get a great harvest. Surprise your garden neighbors and your family with the unusual Exhibiton bow!
